NHL 2008 NHL Draft List

I decided to make a preliminary list of American players eligible for next June's NHL Entry Draft. Obviously this list will change a lot by next June, but I figured now would be a good time to get things started. I decided to only rank players I've seen play, so there are a couple of names missing from this list that belong here. I also didn't include goalies because they're a little tougher to rank. I made sure to run this list by someone who does this for a living to make sure there was nothing too ridiculous on here.

Without further ado, here's the list.

COLIN REDDIN ; Elite.

Colin Reddin should be first overall, just ask his mom.

looks like most of these kids you listed are just turning or will be turning 18. kids who are under 20 before Dec 31 2008 will be eligible. you don't list any of players who were ranked by NHL CSS last year who are still eligible. would any of them make your list?

I only included first-time eligible players. Everyone else was passed over in the draft just two months ago. There will definitely be some older players that have great years this year, however, and will emerge as draft candidates. I just think it's a little early to start picking them out.

Great start of the season list, alot of ntdp kids on list, maybe they will have as many drafted as last year.

Grant scott does not make your list?

Why?

Anonymous said...

what about the rest of the 18u's you dont even have four of their top scorers. lol Scout.

Anonymous said...

where can you find the stats from last year u18s

Anonymous said...

it would be last years 17u's for stats.

Chris said...

Grant Scott is not on the list because I thought he was already on it, and apparently he isn't. I had cut and pasted some guys around, and he must have accidentally got chopped.

Is Jordan Schorder too young for next years draft, or just too short to be drafted high.

Chris said...

Schroeder is eligible for the 2009 draft. He'll likely be a first round draft pick.

what about seth helgeson?

Helgeson is '09 -- 10/8/90

Why did Cichy leave the NTDP?
I saw him play (internet)at the u18 Ivan Hlinka memorial today. Looked good.

Anonymous said...

The person that asked about Cichy... Whats the link for Web Feed of u18 Ivan Hlinka memorial ?

thats the worst list ive seen

The website is infonet.tv
It is Slovacian so turn down the volume and listen to your own, unless, you can understand the language.

Good work. Just can you put the team the players play for and maybe a comment on each one.

Anonymous said...

zach bogosian could be a first round pick

Anonymous said...

Chris dosn't know squat!

Anonymous said...

If you go back and read the original piece, it states that he only ranked players who he seen play.
But yes, Zach Bogosian is 1st round material.

Chris,

Should not put out a list like this when he misses the top 1990 US defenseman Zac Bogosian. It is tulry amazing that somebody that only sess about half of the players can make such bold statements. i have been watching this blog miss players for years. The only scouts that matter are the ones with the NHL teams. i know from experience that the better player end up okay. The other side of this is that the over hyped guys just do not pan out.

Anonymous said...

No Dewhurst?

How hard is it to understand that he's only ranking guys he's PERSONALLY SEEN PLAY.

Anonymous said...

Try to think of it as information sharing and team work.
If you look at an NHL, CHL, NCAA team, they usually have regional scouts who specialize in one area. The scouts compile information, sit down and discuss the players that they are familiar with. I think that you get a better read that way rather than pretending to know players that you have never seen before.
It seems to me that he is speaking from experience of the players that he has seen.
*If you read the original post it mentions that he did not comment on players that he has not seen.

Anonymous said...

its not very hard to understand hes only ranking players hes seen play, but i have seen him write about bogosian so i am assuming hes seen him play

Anonymous said...

Why don't the rest of you post your own list if you think it's so bad.

Anonymous said...

any birthyear player that has drafted, invited to selects, played on u17's, u18's are supposed to be the cream of the crop ,they should all be on the list.

This is your USA draft list. You should give an American hockey player Toews spot.Canada has already given him his kudos.

Chis is pro Minnesota players. Towes is from Canada but plays in Minnesota. I feel that his list does need some serious work, but, in my opinion, Towes will go first round.

Looks like alot of Major A guys at the top.

Anonymous said...

Chris is most definitely NOT pro-Minnesota. He is pro-Michigan.

Anonymous said...

Alot of Majar A players are at the top because more and more of the better American players are taking that route.

Anonymous said...

you have adam comrie at 5? he has a lot of upside but his ability to make a play is very limited...hes a big guy that can skate but his hockey sense is well below average.other than that I like your list. I dont know about anyone else but i think colin wilson is going to drop a lot this year. his feet are not good enough for a top nhl pick and might struggle in the college game. more of a whl type player.

anon 4:59 has it half right:

Whenever Chris says anything negative about Minnesota, Chris is an anti-Minnesota troll.

Whenever Chris says something objective (neutral) or positive about Minnesota, it's ignored because it is easier to just blanket rate someone.

They call Sioux fans "Halos" Sheesh. All hail Minnesota. The most blessed hockey players in the universe. Hopefully someday the rest of us will be seen worthy if they can see us from their high horse down the slant of their noses.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, and you might have an argument if Chris didn't troll on GPL and USCHO. I have admitted several times that he can be fair, but Chris often takes cheap shots. Nice try at putting words in the mouth of Minnesota fans. Go back to complaining about the referees, remember stick with your strength. Because comprehension is obviously a weakness for you.

nice list that is driven by one individuals view. I like to say that many of these lists are based on the four "p's" of hockey ; politics, perseption, pedigree, and public relations. fun and entertainment value primarily

Major Jr players develop quicker and more get drafted into the NHL .Jenks & co. made the right decision to play in the OHL?CHL.

Anonymous said...

College get's a fair share of drafted kids, but major junior players are more developed.

So if the player is a low projection as a pro go to school. If projection is high go major junior.

Pretty simple

Anonymous said...

all the major jrs kids are projected to have a big year this year so they say. something about lack of playing time last year. they say you should practice 4-1 so a guess if you look at the playing time they are more developed . so they say. I think

Anonymous said...

actually college players develop more physically because they have time to lift and mature into their bodies whereas major junior players play in so many games, they don't have time to get stronger and bigger from lifting.

Anonymous said...

thats what the off season is for...you dont lift heavy during a season.

Well some do and it's not exactly proper.

Anonymous said...

why are so many kids leaving college early? Because most end up in major junior to develop quick or the AHL.

Name 1 kid that left college early to play in the USHL?

The nhl teams are the ones that advise this.

Anonymous said...

why would you leave college to play in the ushl? that would be a step down...and there's nothing wrong to lifting heavy during the season. I've talked to high quality players in the major junior ranks who wish that they could have lifted more during the season.

Anonymous said...

Ian Keserich left Ohio State to play in the USHL, but I do get your point.
