Denver Announces Recruits

(Tip of the hat to Let's Go DU)

Denver put out a release announcing their large freshmen class for this upcoming season, and the release contained a few surprises.

First off, former Edina high school defenseman Joey Brehm will play for the Pioneers this year. I think this season could be a rough adjustment for Brehm, but he is a kid with a lot of potential that could help the Pioneers down the road.

The other surprise is that Southern Minnesota Express goalie Lars Paulgard isn't mentioned. In his place is goalie Eddie Guinn, who played in the Central States Hockey League last season. The CSHL is a Tier 3 Jr. A league(formerly Jr. B). Not too many players come to college straight from the CSHL to college, but many former players in that league have worked their way up from the CSHL to other junior leagues and onto college, most notably, Hobey Baker finalist Eric Ehn.

half that class will be good, the other half will be of the "bench-warmer" level imo.

Guinn - 0-4-1 in the CSHL with a 5.51 GAA and .842 save %. He was released in early November. I can't believe that he is a scholarship recruit, my bet is he will never play.

It doesn't say he's a scholarship recruit, does it? His stats scream "recruited walk-on."

Recruited walk on? His stats say warm-body for slap shot drills!!

Frankly, this story makes no sense

I don't know, but I think Guinn is a better choice than Paulgaard. I know it is the choice of the person, but seriously, Guinn has no other shot at a DI slot outside of DU based on the stats and the fact that he never caught on with any higher tier juniors such as the USHL, Canadian juniors, or even the NAHL or EJHL.

He comes in as a practice goaltender and knows it, gets a good education, and is part of a storied program. I think this was a good deal for Guinn.

Paulgaard can now focus on earning a DI berth at a school that could give him playing time.

I believe they could have easily found a better goalie then Guinn - somebody that actually has some talent.

You never know. Maybe he is as good as the surroundings.

rumor has it that Gwoz had a Denver native try out for the team as the practice goalie that was really good but Gwoz wouldnt let him play because he was coming out of high school. I guess he was really mean about the whole situation. DU doesnt even really have a walk on try out any more.
