Other Departures

I've been a little slow on the trigger this past week. Two college players left school early and made their NHL debuts last night.

Michigan State's Justin Abdelkader gave up his senior year to join the Detroit Red Wings. He saw about 11 minutes of ice time last night, and should get more in the Wings last couple games since they clinched the President's Trophy last night and the Wings are struggling with injuries right now.

Wisconsin's Kyle Turris also signed with Phoenix less than 24 hours after Wisconsin's season was over. He played about 19 minutes for the Coyotes last night.

Turris looked like the draft pick we all expected with the Coyotes. With the exception of the weekend in Ohio and against RM under Eaves he seemed restricted. Be it Eaves' system or the players UW played him with UW wasn't a good fit for him. Glad to seem him playing like everyone anticipated. college hockey or at least UW wasn't a good fit for him.

I think UW was a fine fit for Turris - he needed to bulk up and get stronger on his skates to play well in the NHL.

He will also come back and finish his classwork for this semester, so he will leave in good academic standing and has expressed interest in finishing his degree down the road.

Turris' mother has made it clear in the press that Wisco. will pay for him to get his degree no matter how long he played at UW. She has stated that was the determining factor in him coming to UW, the only school that promised to pay for his education no matter how long he stayed. How does that work?

...yeah, because if they don't pay for his tuition, he'd have to take out student loans??? Pretty sure that was not the deciding factor. It's actually a practice that is somewhat common in college hockey.

Actually I'd love to know if what is being said about UW paying for Turris to go school, regardless of how long he stayed is true. I know some UW fans have said this, but it seems unlikely because schools are prohibited from offering inducements other than a scholarship which ends after graduation, loss of eligibility, or turning professional. I think this is an Internet rumor run amok.

As far as Turris developing under Eaves. Within the system Eaves runs and with the young team UW had, Turris had a nice season. I don't think much more could have been reasonably expected.
