(Californian) to SCSU.
Yet another Non-Minnesotan player taking a spot away on a Minnesota-based college team.
scsu has a coaching staff that is buiding the program. Beating UW and eliminating them in two games from the WCHA play-offs with a much less highly touted recruiting class has people taking note. Coaching staff at UW may be one of the highest paid but having a hard time getting wins with top recruits coming in for last two years. Look for scsu to continue to build a winning program.
UW was doomed from the start, when you start the season by having your returners give-up their jersey numbers for the freshmen coming in it sets a precident of nothing being earned.
Not sure how much credit SCSU deserves. Especially when you land a guy that isn't exactly high on the demand list around college hockey circles.
As far building a program, they had a better team last year than they do this year. The jury is out on whether the building is going on or not. Especially considering they haven't lost players to the pros as much as a North Dakota or a Minnesota typically do and can't fall back on that reasoning for their step backward. Besides their power play, they are actually a pretty average team. Their top guys are have bloated numbers on the power play but are way less effective five on five. Look at their plus/minus rating of their best players as proof of this. All negative numbers despite some pretty good offensive stats.
They have beaten some pretty highly recruited teams and their scorers don't lose their scoring ability when playing under this coach. Motzko was a great team builder at MN and looks to be building SCSU. He suffered losses at MN and was still able to win and believe as the pros look to him for players he will still be putting out a product worth buying into.

Not sure what a playa is but great pick up for state. Motzko really has the program on the up and up.
