Cedar Rapids Roughriders forward Tyler Thompson committed to Minnesota State this week. Thompson played his high school hockey at Benilde-St. Margaret's in the Twin Cities, before moving on to Cedar Rapids. He's having a breakout year this year with 30 points in 33 games, which puts him 16th in league scoring.
Thompson's story is pretty remarkable. At the age of 9, he had to undergo chemotherapy to treat non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Also, as an odd bit of trivia, Minnesota State now has commitments from two of the three players to outscore James van Riemsdyk at the 2006 Select 17 Festival(Thompson and Adam Mueller).

Is the Essel kid from Hopkins on the Mav's radar? His dad Bill was a Division III All American there in the late seventies.
