Rogers to Notre Dame

The Port Huron Times Herald is reporting that Notre Dame has received a verbal commitment from Marysville, Michigan goalie Joe Rogers.

Rogers has to be one of the most interesting stories in junior hockey. He was born with a birth defect in his glove hand, which makes it nearly impossible to catch pucks in his glove, but he has worked to become one of the best goalies in his age group. He'll be playing Junior B hockey for the Petrolia Jets in the Western Ontario Hockey League.

UPDATE: The Times Herald ran a full article on Rogers. He'll join the Irish in 2009.

There is actually a town called Michigan, North Dakota. :)

If he is good enough to play at Notre Dame why play junior b hockey this year?

My guess would be so that he can live at home and finish high school at the same school.

I guess that is an alright idea but what does that do for his hockey development. Junior b is worse than high school in most states.

Is junior b better than AAA in michigan since most good high school players play AAA instead of high school there.

Problem is Petrolia is in Ontario, he is from Michigan. The school theory is debunked.

Petrolia is only about 30 miles from where he lives, so it's actually a tiny bit less driving than he did when he played for Belle Tire last season.

The WOHL is a decent junior league. Not as many college prospects come from the league anymore, but it serves as a nice minor league for the OHL, for the most part.

Junior B in Canada is not quite what the typical American is used to when thinking of Jr. B.

Canadian B is for the most part a decent grade of hockey, honestly I feel its no worse than the NAHL.
