With Danny Mattson making a commitment to North Dakota earlier this week, Minnesota wasted little time in adding their first recruit for 2009 or beyond. Blake School junior Josh Birkholz committed to Minnesota. Birkholz is an up-and-coming player for the Bears who has had a very nice summer, including a good performance at the Select 16 Festival, and playing well for the US U17 team at the Five Nations Tournament.
Birkholz is scheduled to graduate from Blake in 2009, but like many recruits signed by the Gophers, he could play a year in the USHL before enrolling at Minnesota.
