Pimp My University-Provided Ride Fred Girard of the Detroit News writes an article about university-provided cars for athletic coaches. Apparently the state of Michigan's economic crisis can be entirely tied to the 80-some foreign cars the University of Michigan is buying for members of their athletic department. There's a lot of kvetching sandwiched around statements like: "Even though the university car programs operate at little or no direct cost to taxpayers..." and "Schools pay for the cars in a variety of ways, frequently by swapping season tickets, signage and program advertisements."

Also, the article mentions that Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson is one of four people in the athletic department to get two cars. The other three are football coach Lloyd Carr, athletic director Bill Martin, Martin's top aide Mike Stevenson, and not including basketball coach John Beilein.

Hockey schools Ferris State, Lake Superior, Northern Michigan, and Wayne State don't have a car program.

Denver added Sioux City Musketeers forward Anthony Maiani for next fall, according to Chris Heisenberg. Maiani is the younger brother of Ohio State forward Domenic Maiani.

Doc DelCastillo continued his recruiting roll since taking over as head coach as Alaska. Chris Heisenberg lists Alaska as getting verbal commitments from two players. The first is forward Tim Revell, who played for Kingston in the OPJHL last year. He'll join the Nanooks in 2008. The second is defenseman Bob Marx. Marx is a '90 birthdate, but is expected to join the Nanooks in 2010, so I've got some time to hammer out some good "Capital is dead labor" jokes.

Duluth is facing a crisis of sorts. WDIO-TV in Duluth is dropping their coverage of UMD hockey games, due to lack of interest from the viewership. RWD does a fantastic job of breaking down the situation. It looks like they'll be moving to Charter Cable, which is good for them, but dilutes the coverage of St. Cloud and Mankato, who are already on Charter Cable.

Pretty misleading on how it's labeled "University-provided" cars. At least at U of M, the athletic department is completely financially independent of the rest of the University.

With John Kyle's previous ties to used cars, I'm sure NMU could swing something if they felt left behind.
