Recapping Last Night

It was a playoff-like atmosphere last night at Mariucci Arena. You could tell it was playoff-like because Minnesota fans actually cheered for something other than a goal(Congrats on actually making noise for almost half of the third period, Minnesota fans), and Kellen Briggs lost.

Glenn Fisher played an outstanding game in net and Geoff Paukovich tipped home a powerplay goal to give Denver a gutty 1-0 on the road. Minnesota had some great chances throughout the game, including three goalposts, but couldn't get anything into the net.

St. Cloud kept pace with Denver for second place in the league by smacking around Duluth 5-0. Andrew Gordon's three point night moved him into a tie for the top overall scorer in the WCHA.

Western Michigan pulled off the biggest upset of the night by knocking off first place Notre Dame by a score of 3-2. The Broncos got out to a 2-0, which they relinquished in the third period, but netted the game-winner with less than 3 minutes to play. David Brown did not have a great game for the Irish, surrendering 3 goals on just 19 shots. Western Michigan is quietly having a pretty decent season that could save coach Jim Culhane's job. Their 17 league points far exceeds what most people expected of them this season.

Ohio State continued their strong play in the second half of the season by tying Miami in Columbus. The Buckeyes have not lost since Tom Fritsche returned to the lineup on 12/29.

Anchorage was able to hold off Michigan Tech in Anchorage and win 3-2. The Seawolves get a huge two points in the 6-team race for the WCHA's final playoff spot.

Michigan beat up on Alaska by a score of 6-2 last night in Fairbanks. A few days after I say that T.J. Hensick isn't a legit Hobey candidate because he's too one-dimensional, and that he hasn't even scored a goal since Thanksgiving, Hensick goes out and nets a hat trick. Also, Billy Sauer continued his solid play of late. Since Christmas, Sauer has stopped 93.9% of the shots he has faced.

Bryan Lerg scored a huge overtime goal to lead Michigan State over Lake Superior. Pat Inglis got the start in goal for the Lakers to give Jeff Jakaitis a rest, and played excellent, but the Lakers couldn't get enough offense to beat the Spartans.

Omaha beat Ferris State by a score of 3-1 to move into a tie for 5th place in the league. They still have a ways to go to catch 4th place Michigan though.

Northern Michigan beat up on Bowling Green 4-1. It's been a tough season for the Falcons.

Thats funny, when I was flipping through the channels and heard a loud crowd noises I just assumed it was at the Kohle Center. And low and behold it was at the Mooch! I couldn't believe my eyes! What is going on! The world must be coming to an end.

I disagree that Hensick is a one-dimensional player at this point in his career. He's been outstanding at both ends of the ice this year. He's working his butt off and being very responsible back there--and I was extremely critical of him last year when that wasn't the case.

He hasn't had a lot of goals this year, but his passing has been as good as I've ever seen. I really hope UM can string together some wins and move up somewhat in the polls to give his Hobey chances a boost, because he really does deserve it IMO.
