Dorr Leaves Gophers

Minnesota forward Mike Dorr has left the University of Minnesota hockey team, telling teammates that he needs "to do what's best for my own interest." Dorr had only appeared in two games this year for the Gophers.

Dorr is no stranger to controversy. He committed to Minnesota-Duluth in January of his junior year of high school, then, about a year later, during a very successful senior season, he re-opened his recruitment, and committed to Minnesota about a month and a half later.

Now, Dorr will likely return to juniors and try to transfer to another WCHA school. In the interim period between backing out on Duluth and committing to Minnesota, Dorr listed Wisconsin, Minnesota State, and Notre Dame as other potential schools of interest. Minnesota State currently has his high school linemate Adam Mueller on their team.

Good luck getting another WCHA team to take a flyer on your ass Mike. I have a feeling you'll be landing in D-3.

There's more to this story than what is portrayed

Gophers didn't want him....

Have fun playing at UW Eau Claire, Mikey. of course, you'll probably leave there after you don't get the number you want. Whiner.

Which junior team is he going to be playing for?

Another year, another mid-season departure. There's a pattern here that's a little unseemly. The question now is who's next? Keep an eye on Brandon Martell for next year if they even let him on the team.

What more is there to the story?

There is more to the story, but it would be distasteful to say anything about Lucia now that he might have a serious illness. It also involves Hill, but both go hand and hand.

I think it's a cop out to say that there is more behind the story but you wont say it because Lucia has an illness. For all we know he just has the flu. If Lucia or Hill did something, I want to hear about it.

Martell? Is he still even playing hockey?

Hey, I dislike the Gophers just like so many who post here, but I don't think this is UMN's fault.

I'd probably ask more toward Lucia's side of things if Dorr hadn't already ditched a school after committing there.

I think Dorr is the reason behind this move. I don't know what his mindset is or his reasoning, but I'm not so sure that the WCHA will be a viable option for him anymore.

If he wants to stay in Minnesota, he might want to investigate Bemidji. Otherwise, he'd probably be wise to try some CCHA schools.

And Notre Dame won't take him in any bigger capacity than he gave up at Minnesota so I don't see why he'd want to go there.

Martell is playing for Fairbanks of the NAHL.

Really isn't a big deal here. The story really seems to be that Dorr wants to play hockey and hasn't been able to beat out other players for playing time. From what I understand the opportunity to dress for games results from performance in practice.

The Gophers are pretty deep this year. Cracking the line-up requires serious effort and some times being in the right place at the right time. A little patience too.

Woog commented on Dorr during the Friday night broadcast. What he basically said was that Dorr is only college aged once so if he wants to play college hockey elsewhere he might as well move now in order to get on with his life. No hard feelings.

I'm disappointed Dorr decided to leave the Gophers. If he had what it takes I'm sure he would have gotten the opportunity to play at some point. It's a long season, anything can happen.

I agree with RR. Dorr wasn't playing, and he wants to play. Is it possible there could be "more" to this story than what's being portrayed? Of course, there's always more, because there's in fact very little portrayed at all.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that a kid deciding to transfer from one school to another — and being forced to sit out a year as a consequence — is a last resort, and usually pretty indicative of some disagreement with the coaching staff. As in, a disagreement over how much ice time a kid is getting, and Dorr hardly played even in the two games he did dress for.

Don't make a cryptic, anonymous post alleging something more sinister than a basic disagreement between player and coach, then decline to elaborate out of so-called respect for an ailing coach. What's the point of that, other than to portray your anonymous self as more "in the know" than others?
