Mr. Hockey Candidates

I took a stab at the top ten candidates for the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award. It looks like this year's award will be Nick Leddy's to lose, but there are a number of talented players that could win the award.

The only person I see you missed that most likely will be up for the award is Anders Lee from Edina.

On KFAN yesterday, Kevin Gorg opined that he thought Anders Lee would be a frontrunner for Mr. Hockey. And that he would be the beneficiary of more playing time and attention due to Zach Budish's injury.

For the sake of full disclosure, I'm an SCSU fan. Not for nothin, but two of the top three players on the career scoring list were from division A schools... all three won the Mr. Hockey award. Could Ben Hanowski be tops on the list and not win Mr. Hockey? I think that's at least something to ponder.

Also, he may or may not be in contention for Mr. Hockey, but if Nick Oliver outscores Tyler Landman, the former will certainly be OUT of contention.

You're right, Pohl was drafted in the 9th round. Hanowski will go much higher than that!

If Hanowski breaks the state record he's got to be a top candidate regardless of the competition he faces.
He doesn't set the schedule, he just dominates the teams on it.

anon 4:06--As stated he's no Johnny Pohl. Results matter. For the record:

Johnny Pohl:
Redwing HS 95-98
GP 112 144g 234a 378tp
Mr. Hockey 1998

UM 99-02 GP-165 71g 129a 200tp
Team Awards:
99-00 Don Clark Leadership Award
00,01,02 Mike Crupi Most Determined Player Award
01-02 Doc Romness Leadership & Sportsmanship Award
01 Alternate Captain
02 Co-Captain

Conference Awards:
00,01,02 WCHA All Academic Award
02 All WCHA First Team

National Awards:
02 All American First Team
02 NCAA All Tournament Team
02 NCAA National Championship

NHL:
115gp 17g 21a 38tp

Your boy has a long way to go before he can carry Johnny Pohl's jockstrap. With any luck he can try and help SCSU win their first NCAA Tourney game next season.

This is a post regarding the Mr. Hockey award, not the Hall of Fame. Here's the only thing you posted regarding Pohl before he won the Mr. Hockey award...

Johnny Pohl:
Redwing HS 95-98
GP 112 144g 234a 378tp

Anders Lee will be an absolute monster this year. Playing in his 5th and final year of HS hockey, he should be an absolute front runner along with Leddy and Mattson. His results in the Elite league combined with his football proved this will be his year. Looking at his current HS totals he should finish well over 200 pts for career.

The opinions of many high end hockey guys suggest that Lee is not the guy. Leddy and Mattson seem to be the front runners. One is a forward and one a D. Central Scouting has Leddy rated higher than Mattson.

Obviously, no one can rule out the other great candidates.

As for Lee, the guy must have his own P.R. department. He is the third best forward on the Hornet team. Yet, has his own UTube videos complete with contact email ........ ??? Plus, other ink and recognition. Wonder who is driving that.

Lee being the third best player on his team? I guess you nailed it. For the year, Lee finished as the leading scorer in the Elite NIT Bauer tourney, Leading scorer in the Schwanns Gold Cup, and Leading scorer in the State Tourney, Finished 3rd in the state in scoring behind Hanowski and Benik with a AA schedule.
