Zion Chooses Clarkson

Ottawa-born forward Mitch Zion has chosen to play NCAA hockey and has committed to Clarkson for the 2010 season. Zion was selected first overall in the CJHL draft by the Ottawa Jr. Senators, and 88th in the OHL draft by the Sarnia Sting.

Appreciate the news on the Clarkson recruit, but I was wondering why the note on an east coast recruit when you typically don't mention them.
Cheers!

Read where Zion was projected to be a top two round OHL draft pick but was leaning NCAA so he slipped to the 5th round. This is a good victory for the NCAA over the OHL in terms of player procurement.

Zion was rated to go in round 4-5, he was never AA Ranked by the OHL. Nevertheless, still a very good hockey player. Should have a very good future at Clarkson.

Hey 9:35am, The #1 overall CJHL is rated a 4-5 round selection? Does not make sense.....unless you are trying to say the NCAA got a player the OHL didn't regard that highly.

agree with 7:59, sounds a bit odd..also agree 9:49 that is what I had also herd.

Him projected to be a first round pick is correct. The CHL posters are just trying to shrug it off and make things up to make it seem like it didn't matter.

It is not uncommon for very good players to go late in the draft when they've signalled that they have no intention of playing major junior and plan to go the NCAA route. For a team to pick this type of player early and hope they can change his mind is a big risk. I believe Zion signalled he had an NCAA deal in the works or done and would not be interested in Major Junior, hence the late round pick. Now they will work to change his mind.

7:59 PM"

Makes total sense.

CJHL teams will take players early that they believe will spend time with their teams.

Early OHL picks are often passed on until later for the fear they will never play in the CJHL, or, will only spend one year.

1:23 you are correct --- but only partially.

Yes Gubrandson and Spooner who are arguably the top forward and defenseman in all of Ontario, who were locks to play in the OHL prior to the draft, and who went 4th and 5th overall in the OHL draft are the type of players that a CJHL team would pass on.

But Zion is hands down the third best 1992 prospect who played in the Ottawa area last season and there wasn't any other players but Gubrandson and Spooner who CJHL teams passed on in the first round of the draft that you would consider a high end player.

He wasn't a projected 1st Round player. That is a fact. BUT, he still is a very, very good hockey player, and it is a good move by Clarkson. It will also be good for the CJHL

He was projected to be a late first round or early to mid second round
