The CCHA became the first college hockey conference to officially announce that they will use an NHL-style shootout to decide tie games during league play.
This was almost a foregone conclusion after the NCAA rules committee approved shootouts to decide regular season games. Shootouts are a topic that has been beaten to death, but while they are gimmicky, this should make CCHA hockey even more exciting this year.

Ugh, I hated the shootout when Hockey East had it.
Shootouts in college? Yuck.
What next? Long drive contests to decide golf tournements? I'd rather see going back to a full 20 minutes or at the very least a ten minute OT period. Why decide the outcome of a game by bastardising the game? Tacky at best.

Right. This will certainly solve that problem of people leaving during sudden death overtime because it was so dull.
What I like even less than the shoot-out itself is that it makes some games worth three points and others worth two.
I hope the WCHA DOES NOT follow suit on this.
Shootouts are the biggest joke in hockey since Patrik Stefan. The CCHA is obviously being run by complete clods.
