Hobey Hat Trick Announced

The Hobey Baker committee announced the three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award.

Michigan's Kevin Porter, Boston College's Nate Gerbe, and Miami's Ryan Jones were the three finalists named. Porter is considered the very heavy favorite to win the award.

North Dakota's Jean-Philippe Lamoureux was omitted from the final three, but I'm sure North Dakota fans will take that news with their usual grace and aplomb, and we'll hear very little whining about it.

IMO they have a right to be pissed about JPL being left out. It's not as egregious as Hensick not making it last year, but JPL would've been a very strong #2 on my ballot. #3 wouldn't have even been close.

If you're going to have 2 forwards from the same conference in the final 3, there should at least be a question as to who is the better candidate. Jones has no shot. And I have to believe JPL is a better candidate than Gerbe due to the misconduct rule.

I would've voted:
1. Porter
2. JPL
3. Gerbe (kind of a jerk, but I've always liked the kid and it's impossible to ignore what he's done on the ice)

In my eyes, JPL was the only guy that had the potential to steal some votes from Porter. Still no shot he would've won, but he should definitely have been #2.

No problem here. This will keep the team focused on one thing. Go Sioux!!

you really need to lay off the UND fans. UND has one of the most loyal fan bases in the country. when you make stabs at und and it's fans far more than any other school, you can expect some noise.

Surely I'm not the only person here who realizes that when UND fans and their hockey team start acting/playing with respect, the overall feeling will change. Because honestly, I don't know what's worse... the thugs on the ice, or the jackasses that support them.

JPL may be a little disappointed, but I can assure you his only goal in college is to win a title to add to the total his father contributed to. Also I think my fellow Sioux fans are catching on to Chris's methods here. I believe he gets a kick out of the reactions of Sioux fans because he knows we live for college hockey and probably dominate in hits to his blog. And Chris you may be right, growing up in North Dakota college hockey is all we got, but you have to admit our school is pretty damn good at it. Go Sioux!!

"UND has one of the most loyal fan bases in the country."

You mean brainwashed, arrogant, and without perspective?? When you people get off your high horse, we'll listen. Until then, quit your bitching.

The JPL omission is stupid, just like the Hensick omission was stupid last year. I still say Ehn over Hensick was a bigger insult than Gerbe/Jones over JPL (different positions, top teams, etc), but what's the point of nominating Jones? He has exactly 0.0% chance of beating Porter. Porter was unanimous player of the year in the CCHA. Porter's team dominated Jones' team. Porter's team is in the Frozen Four and Jones' isn't. Porter's numbers are better. Porter's team did better all year long. Will Jones get a single 1st place vote? It's hard to imagine.

And don't get me started on the hypocrisy of passing over Hensick for minor personality reasons and then nominating Gerbe.

Anon, 1127 you sound like a petty Goofs fan.

This year's Hobey is all Porter's. Pick two other token finalists as the other two from the remaining ten...it doesn't matter. JPL, Gerbe, Jones, etc... are all just "filler" for the remaining spots.

Most loyal? Take a look back to the early 90s when the old Ralph was half full (at best) and remind me about this "loyalty" thing again...

I realize that this is a blog and value your opinion; however, it's getting a little old with the Sioux bashing.

Character counts when it comes to the Hobey Baker Award. With that in mind Lammy is on the outside looking in. Some examples of his lack of character: His propensity to dive whenever he is breathed on. Kicking opponents re:kicking Jay Barriball. Off ice transgressions. IE: DUI last season. Biggest hotdog in college hockey.

On ice the Sioux split every series in the first half of the season. Lammy was good but not great.

Add this to the list: Panzer was robbed. Oshie was robbed. Lammy was robbed. Is there really any doubt that the Hobey Baker Selection Committee has it in for North Dakota? Just have coach Hakstol give them all the finger. He's got the experience. Just ask Don Adam.

JPL = diver = no Hobey. Pretty simple.

This IS the Hobey Baker award, isn't Lamoureux a goalie?

Well if Porter wins, he'll be more deserving of it than the garden gnome who won last year.

JPL probably should have made the cut, but maybe the voters actually paid attention to all the histrionics JPL chooses to display after a run-of-the-mill save. I'm sure the Siouxage fans hate this showboating just like they hated the jersey-pop last year.

Pass the halos!

This UND fan doesn't have a complaint with the final 3. All are very good players who had good seasons. Whether Jones has a chance to beat out Porter for the award has already been decided so it is really a moot point as to whether JPL could "steal" votes from Porter.

bait has been taken... let the entertainment begin!

Do you mean with the same kind of grace with which you operate your blog. Seems you never miss a chance to take a shot. It's a good thing that you operate a blog, because your objectivity leaves a little to be desire.

As a Sioux fan, I have no problem with JPL not getting in the final three. He wasn't going to win. If Elliot couldn't win a couple of years ago, JPL wasn't going to win this year.

On a side note, I find it comical how you like to stir the pot and take shots at Sioux fans, but there are times where you're citing information in your posts as coming from Brad Schlossman's Blog, a UND Hockey writer. A tad hypocritical aren't we Chris?

Buddy,

You need to get over this problem you have with Sioux fans. I only read your blog for factual information about Western hockey- recruits, team information, etc.. This editorializing is going to start hurting your reputation for being a great resource for information. If nothing else, spread the "love" around. I am sure the Sioux are not the "axis" of hockey evil.

Could you tell me when JPL got that DUI? Get your facts straight and if character counts for something wouldnt you say gerbe would have been left out?

to: 9>7

hey, michigan. before you start spouting half-truths about JPL maybe you should be your facts straight. there no DUI on his record but that's not important to you, i guess. you've just been brainwashed over the last couple of months listening to the founder of this fourm's North Dakota bashing. it's not your fault. Hope the Sioux will meet Michigan in the finals and test your goalie. go matter the outcome, games between ND/UM are pretty entertaining. Get by B.C. damn it!! Go Sioux!

Sorry I got Bina and JPL mixed up on the DUI issue. I must of been thinking about when JPL got the shiner from a Fighting Sioux football player while hanging out in a bar.
