Pretty Darn Good Official Screws Up Again

Here's the latest WCHA officiating controversy, courtesy of Todd Milewski:
Referee Derek Shepherd blew his whistle just before Andy Bohmbach slid a rebound past Jase Weslosky in the third period, with the Badgers down 3-2. The puck popped up on Weslosky, who extended his glove in front to try to catch the puck. It was out of his reach, however, and fell to the ice.

Shepherd, who was trailing the play, must have thought that Weslosky grabbed the puck out of the air. Eaves' issue with the call was Shepherd's positioning.
There's also YouTube evidence. I wonder if Shepherd will face any consequences for blowing such an important call in such a critical game?(No, I couldn't type that with a straight face.)

He lost sight of the puck and blew it dead, that happens all the time. Yes he was out of position but that's nowhere near as bad as some other calls missed this year.
I'm starting to think the whining about officiating is going a bit too far.

would have been nice for bohmbach to get the goal as he has been given little playing time and seems to get things done when he is out there, however limited. Line of Goro, Bohmbach and Bearson was a strong one that coaches chose not to play all year and it may have cost them over-all. no accountability for other forwards who didn't perform or a fight for playing time cost.UW has had two top recruiting classes in past two years yet continues to struggle, coach?

Shepherd lost sight of the puck because he was out of position. Everybody makes mistakes but I don't hear about these types of issues with referees in other leagues with this type of regularity.
With teams fighting for positioning and a possible NCAA birth these cases become more magnified.
Plus, this is the second time that a game tying, third period goal has been incorrectly taken away from UW this year. If Bucky manages to get a tie out of each of those games they would have home ice secured for the playoffs.
I wonder if the guy who posted first would be as uunderstanding if it happened to his team.

Wow there is actually someone out there who thinks that Gorowsky/Bombach/Bearson should be a regular line for the Badgers and calls them "strong"? Stop smoking crack.

It would be great to see Bombach score no doubt, but none of those three are game changing players, and while I also question some of Eaves decisions on ice time, I'm not delusional enough to think those 3 should replace any other fowards other than Engel who is now on defense again.

I don't even have a comment about the goal, Sheppard is consistently one of the worst WCHA refs, every team gets screwed by him being on the ice for their game(s).

Earlier in the same game St. Cloud put the puck in the net in what looked like an apparent goal. Shep blew the play dead because he lost sight of the puck on that play as well. Why not mention that? The replay clearly showed Connelly didn't have control of the puck. The replay also showed Shep to be in a position where he could not clearly see the puck. (Although Shep was not out of position)

So he blew the play dead, no goal. The real story of the game was the Badger penalties that led to two power play goals at the end of the second period. The Badgers play was undisciplined and it resulted in a 5 on 3 that St. Cloud capitalized on.

St. Cloud won the game fair and square. Tough bounce Buckey. Stay out of the box.

I'm sure baby-Shep will be sent to his room without supper.

I am waiting in anticipation for your defense of Shegos next blown call.

Go Blue! or is it?

Boo Hoo.

Premature whistles will happen, that's just part of the game. However, they usually happen when the puck is hidden from view, almost covered by the goalie's equipment, or otherwise lodged someplace out of sight.

This particular puck bounced a good 3 feet from goaltender - it wasn't even close to being in the crease. If the official is anywhere in the neighborhood of the play, there's no whistle.

St. Cloud was screwed by officials when they played Denver when Schmidt blew a replay call and while Husky fans were upset, they knew they had a heck of a lot of time to make that call moot.
Same thing for the Badgers, there was over 12 minutes left, they had time to score, they just didn't get it done. That call didn't "finish" the game.
Some people need to get over it, mistakes happen, refs are human and they aren't going to see everything.

St. Cloud fan here and blokski is absolutlely right. There is no reason for a whistle there. The puck is always in sight, there's no scrum, no nothing. Let's take the Badger hating glasses of and be reasonable here

Wisco's problem is they don't have any real go to guys on offense, maybe due to game they play. How would anyone know what the line of Goro, Bohmbach, and Bearson could do? without a shot no one will ever know and it is another "what might have been" for Wisco. this year, A goal here or there, a player who proves himself worthy of ice time. All what might have beens. Strong start had such promise but without coaching and development season may end with only thoughts of what might have been. hope Badgers prove this wrong but frustrating to see such promising freshmen classes come in only to be struggling in the end.

Uncle Bearson is that you? Yeah your nephew belongs in the lineup...ha ha ha. Puff Puff Pass buddy.

At least Shep didn't blow two plays dead while the puck was free in the air, like that idiot Thul did in Duluth.

Naturally, he saw the puck all the way as it came under UMD's goalie and was pushed in for a game-winner in OT.

This league's officiating is majorly effed up.

shouldnt have been a goal anyways. the wisco player interfeared with Weslosky after he bobbled the puck and knocked his stick out of his hands otherwise he wouldve made that second save

No remarks about Wisconsin again getting in a brawl when they lost. Hmmmm!

Anonymous said...

Yeah..because Roe is such an angel running around all night cheapshotting anything in red that moved. That punk would have gotten an ass beating much earlier if the consequences of fighting in college were not so severe.

"No remarks about Wisconsin again getting in a brawl when they lost. Hmmmm!"

Quite a brawl. Not one fight!! None!! Pushing, shoving that's it. Keep reaching buddy!!

Funny that someone says that a guy who's barely 5'7" 170 was "cheapshotting" everything in red that moved. Apparently Goeffrion was an angel.....
Roe is an agitator, he does that well, and guess what, it worked.

Look at this photo on Roe

http://www.sctimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080302/SPORTS0401/303020001/1002

yeah he was the one throwing cheaphshots all night.

When you're 5'7 170 and you know the likelihood that some one is going to take off the gloves and beat your ass is pretty slim due to the consequences, you can be a little punk (or agitator as you prefer to call it). If that little girl ever plays in a league where fighting is only a 5 minute major, nothing more/nothing less, he will get his ass beat and "agitate" very little.

Do you have any photos of why Roe had 19 minutes of penalty time this weekend?

Anonymous said...

Well at least the head official leads by example eh?

Anonymous said...

So you're saying people stick up for themselves and their teammates, huh? Who'd a thunk it!

Did anyone say Roe was an angel? Don't think so, he deserved the CFB he got on Friday, it was stupid.
But if he was throwing cheapshots all game, how come none of them were called?
Why didn't he get anything at the end of the game when he was clocked and Stephenson came over to help?
And he did play in a league where fighting was only a 5 minute last year in the USHL and he fought and did just fine.
As Roe himself says "If they’re going to come after me, it means I’m getting under their skin. They’re not getting under mine."

"But if he was throwing cheapshots all game, how come none of them were called?"

So the fact that he led the weekend in penalties and penalty minutes means he did not get called for his cheapshots? I think Menards has paint thinner on sale this week if you are running out and actually start getting close to having cognasant thoughts.

If there is a playoff rematch with the Badgers, he might want to keep his head up.

Roe is a lot like Huffer Christenson, former UMD Bulldog. Huffer was a real agitator and was very good at getting you and him to fight.

Roe will have a target on his back in Grand Forks. Sioux better be careful though, Roe is just as big of a diver as Lamaroux and Duncan.

"So the fact that he led the weekend in penalties and penalty minutes means he did not get called for his cheapshots? "

You do realize that most of those minutes came from one play on friday that we all admit was stupid? (Even he does)

He was called for one penalty on Saturday, so I ask again, if he was throwing all these cheapshots how come none were called?
Yes we know he dives some, he'll learn (something Earl never did) but the guy is a talent and if he was doing the same thing for your team, you'd have zero complaints.
His job is to get under the skin of opponents, looks like it works on opposing fans too.

At least Earl's diving abilities matured in his sophmore season. Roe truly seems to be a natural at it.

That's your comeback? Really?Sad....
