Hobey Watch

My Top 3

1. Kevin Porter
2. J-P Lamoureux
3. Richard Bachmann.

Porter is still pretty clearly the number one choice. Lamoureux has played exceptionally well at the right time. Since January 11th, he has only given up more than one goal in a game twice. Bachmann probably hasn't gotten the credit he deserves here. CC had a huge question mark in goal coming into this season, and if Bachmann hadn't stepped up the way he did, I'm not sure they would have even been a tournament team.

INCH Hobey Tracker

Is here.

INCH finally joined everyone else around the country in conceding that the race is Porter's to lose. In their podcast this week, there was some Hobey discussion about how there were so many goalies that were possible candidates and so few players. I guess my question is, at what point do we change the standards for what is considered exceptional for a goalie and for a player?

For example, Mark Dekanich is mentioned as a Hobey candidate for having great stats. He's got a .924 save percentage and a 2.10 goals against average, which normally I'd consider great stats, but he's only tied for 12th in the country in save percentage and 10th in GAA. That's like barely in the top 20% of all starting goalies.

Then again, maybe with the downturn in scoring over the past decade or so, you could make the argument that college hockey really is becoming a goalie's game, and a good goalie really is that much more valuable than a good skater. This isn't a perfect analogy, but you could make the comparison to quarterbacks and running backs always winning the Heisman Trophy because they have the most individual control over a game and get the most attention.

porter is the guy but phil is a couple shutouts away from making some serious noise with how the sioux have been playing in front of him and his play as well.

good hobey trio as bachman is great as well

I still agree that it's Porters to lose....but....

Lamoureux is the nations BEST goalie while playing on the currently best team, in the best conference, with the toughest schedule in the country. So, if JPL played on another team not in the WCHA, would his stats be even MORE unbelievable?

So, I think the race is closer than it appears, but it's still Porters right now. Kevin better not have an off week or two though. Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear!

Is Porter a hothead like TJ Hensick? Porter is one tantrum away from blowing this. Hopefully, he learned a lesson from bobblehead Hensick. I think this is one of the goalie's to lose and not Porter's to win.

As a homer I would love to see JP get it, but Porter deserves it. JP has been good, but he also plays behind the best defense in the nation. I see this like Panzer vs. Miller a few years back. Panzer was absolutely robbed by a good goalie that benefited from a very defensive team, and I would hate to see the same happen to Porter. I also hear that Porter is not a prick like Hensick was so good luck to him.

Panzer robbed? Please, with Heatley, Gionta and Leopold also on the list it gets pretty tiresome to continually see the whining about Panzer being robbed.

How about Miller deserved the award and Panzer was one of many that were good but not good enough.

Get over it bud. Panzer was too much of a diver to win the Hobey anyway. Kind of like why JP Lamaroux won't win it either.

If Elliott didn't win it in 05-06 with:
27-5-3, .938 sv%, 1.55 GAA, and 8 SO

why should Lammy win it with (so far):
22-8-2, .934 sv%, 1.68 GAA, and 5 SO

Best team is subjective. Best conference is subjective. Winning your conference isn't, and Porter's team won their conference regular season, while NoDak is not likely to do so. And if JPL is the nation's BEST goalie then I guess Porter is the nation's BEST skater.

i dont think the nations best conference is subjective im a ccha fan and would never pertend to have the best conference in the country.

sioux not likely to win their conference? really, check the standings pal, a sioux sweep and a cc split vs du and they share the title, champions they will be, check your facts next time and then post. thats very likely to happen with a rivalry home and home series with du and cc and the sioux havent lost in 15 games..very likely to happen......
the wcha will win it all, the sioux will at that...the oshie wont let it not happen..hands down the best talent in d 1 hockey with jvr, turris and porter......

Too bad Oshie has a habit of peeing in elavators. Cost him the Hobey.

If the fact that the WCHA is the best conference is subjective, then the fact that I took a dump earlier is also subjective.

If you are actually dumb enough to think the WCHA isn't the best conference, I doubt that you even know that there are other conferences than the CCHA.

habit? really? one time trapped in there for 2 hours, i would have done the same damn thing am im a friken gopher fan defending oshie. hes the best player ive seen in college skill, heart wose in years. zach parise was damn good as well. because he doesnt win the hobey doesnt mean he isnt the bes player out there you friken idiot. ive seen the kid play my team many times and hes by far the hardest working player ive watched with sick skills....wcha wins it all, state won it last year and snuck one in there in the middle of wcha domonance since 1997, later haters

How does that show that ND is likely to win the WCHA? "Not likely" is not the same as "not going to" or "not possible" or "has no chance". And ND has to sweep a solid tournament team like SCSU while CC loses. Could it happen? Sure. Is it more likely than not to occur that way? No way.

Before you tell people to check their facts, you may want to learn to read and then post.

Hey Michigan, how is your boy TJ Hensick doing in the minors or is he back with mommy? I hope Porter does not follow his example and get kicked out of a regional game with 10 minutes left or whatever it was and lose the Hobey. Who knows what sets you guys off.

WCHA11,

My two dogs can go 12 hours in their crates without peeing. So TJ Oshie can't hold it for two hours? The untold rest of the story that disqualifies Oshie from Hobey consideration is that he was out drinking after the game. The outcome being peeing in an elavator and getting caught. Nice.

That may be a-ok by your standards. But peeing in somebody else's private property (elavator shared by many) TJ showed poor judgement and a lack of class. By the way, who cleaned up the elavator anyway? Some janitor or Oshie? or some other resident?

He couldn't hold it for TWO hours? Like I said both of my dogs can do better than that. The simple fact is that if somebody gets caught peeing in an elavator in the building where they live there is a good chance he has done similar things in the past. Except he hadn't gotten caught. But this time he did get caught.

Actions have consequenses.

I'll be impressed if Lammy shuts the door on SCSU this weekend. The Huskies have some big-time scorers and a lethal power-play. If he can post a shutout or a couple one-goal games I'll be a believer, but this weekend will show us what he's got. UND hasn't played many decent scoring teams over the past two months.

do you know how many hockey players drink like fishes and smoke the mary jane? tons of them...get over the drinking crap wit any athlete. big f'n deal. unless its a dui then who gives a rats ass. overblown. get over it and all that crap about dogs, stupid.....

GO DRINK FOR A FEW HOURS, BREAK YOUR SEAL AND TRY TO HOLD IT FOR 2 HOURS YOU FKN PUTZ. ONCED YOU GO WHILE DRINKING ITS OVER AND YOU BROKE THE SEAL. I KNOW I GO EVERY 20 MINUTES WHEN OUT PARTYING...YOU ARE A FOOL, DOGS = POEPLE..WOW..SMART ONE

You last two really don't get it do you? The Hobey Baker Award is given to someone that upholds the ideals of the man it was named after. It isn't going to be given to some guy who doesn't have enough sense to recognize he must conduct himself to a higher standard than your run of the mill party hardy student.

Getting caught peeing in an elavator is the act of a dummy. Justifying that shows you to be dummies too. By the way. If TJ smokes pot too he better get over that before he goes pro. That is kind of frowned on when they pay you to play. Just sayin...

First, I find it stunning that someone could be so dumb as to read that post and emerge with the understanding that I said it was not possible for NoDak to sweep. How could I have been more clear that to say "Could it happen? Sure."?????

In any event, I watched tonight, and NoDak didn't sweep. CC won. NoDak is not the WCHA champion.

You lose.
