Thursday Finals

Six more tickets to St. Paul were handed out tonight, and three of the tonight's winners were surprises.

Top seeds Warroad, Little Falls, and Blake all held their seeds and advanced to the state tournament. All three teams were also in last year's tournament. All three games were tight early, with the favorites pulling away late.

Rosemount took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to two goals from JT Brown, but Woodbury closed out the game with 7 unanswered goals to earn their second consecutive state tournament berth.

At the DECC in Duluth, Anoka didn't seem to come out with the same fire they showed in their dominating win over Grand Rapids, and fell to fourth-seeded Cloquet by a score of 3-2. Cloquet will be the only team seeded fourth or lower in their section to make the state tournament. It's no surprise given that section 7AA seems to always be very deep and always seems to have a few upsets along the way.

And finally, Mankato West will be making their first ever appearance at the state tournament, and the second ever appearance for a school from Mankato, after they defeated Rochester Lourdes 3-1. Looking back at my high school preview, I wrote:
Mankato West should have the section's most dangerous line in Corey Leivermann, Ricky Litchfield, and Ryan Anderson, but will need great goaltending from junior Tyler Bruggeman.
Litchfield and Leivermann each had a goal, while Bruggeman made 40(!) saves to give the Scarlets the win.
