Shegos' Bias Killing Miami Dynasty

After cleverly hiding as one of the most competent officials in all of college hockey for over a decade, CCHA referee Matt Shegos has finally been exposed for what he is, thanks to some hard work by the good people of Miami University.

In this letter to the editor of the Miami student paper, an associate professor, someone who has ostensibly had years of higher education, feels that Matt Shegos' unconscious bias is the reason why Miami lost to Michigan two weeks ago.

I think they may be on to something here. Clearly the selection of Mark Wilkins to officiate last weekend's series between Miami and Ferris State was a result of unconscious bias by CCHA head of officials and Ferris State alum Steve Piotrowski to give Ferris State an advantage. And just wait to see what happens to Miami should they run into Michigan State, the alma mater of CCHA commissioner Tom Anastos, in the CCHA playoffs.

What the hell is going on in Ohio? That's the second most retarded letter I've seen that school post. The first was when the school's sports editor posted an article claiming that Miami was on the verge of being a 'dynasty'.

Love the tongue-in-cheek sarcasm of your post Chris....nice!

The Blog that Yost Built did a breakdown of powerplay opportunities differential by referee last month. UM averages a whopping single extra man advantage per WEEKEND when Shegos calls their games. Some bias!

Easily the most important thing about peanalties is when they are called not how many. In addition, Shegos is known for making cheap calls when the game is no longer in question in an effort even he count.

Chris is a homer.

@Anonymous #3) I highly doubt you'll find more than a handful of Michigan fans that wouldn't GLADLY let the CCHA ban Shegos from doing our games.

If he's biased, he sure as hell doesn't show it.

There's no reason for Miami to bring this up now. No one could've watched those games and thought "Man, that's some biased officiating toward Michigan right there". He and his crew played MAJOR roles in at least two, but possibly three of Miami's five goals Saturday night.

If they could point to some specific examples of this so-called "bias" I'd be a lot more inclined to believe it.

I didn't know Shegos was a Michigan grad until the Michigan/Miami series (I suspect the Miami fans didn't know it either). I didn't know Wilkens went to Ferris until Chris just posted it. The only ref whose alma mater I knew was Pio (Ferris), and out of everyone, he was the MOST kind to Michigan over the years. By far.

A half power-play a game though? That's not bias. Especially considering Michigan has a clear talent advantage on most of the CCHA teams every year.

I just don't see why they bring it up NOW, when they were the clear beneficiaries of some calls/no-calls.

Shegos is a moron. It doesn't make him biased.

Let me get this straight...You're calling someone else out for being biased??? That's like the pot calling the kettle black.

Is there a single ref Michigan fans hate more than Shegos?

Also: considering what Chris is doing for hockey fans with this blog, you'd think that every now and then some of the assholes would just shut up and thank him for writing so often instead of "OMG MCIHIGAN BAIS" that you get in nearly every comment thread.

In the number of instances where his blogs reflect his opinion, Chris does nothing for me as a hockey fan. Colin, you a relative or on the payroll?

Hey anonymous @ 8:11-if this blogger's opinion does nothing for you why read the blog? You could start your own blog, assuming that you don't have a blog already. Since blogging takes time and effort and you're not even willing to put a name on your comment regarding this blog I'm guessing that you just like to talk crap about other peoples' work.

as one who attended both games against Michigan and is admittably a huge Miami fan, both teams have reasons to complain about Shegos. However, he was NOT the reason for the Friday night loss. Miami did not come to play and Michigan was the better team that night. Saturday's tie was an outstanding college hockey game with both teams had chances to win. Shegos was not a factor in determining the outcomes of the games.

Just curious, what does the CCHA think of Miami Ohio. The WCHA thinks they are a complete joke and overrated. Are they for real? I would like to get MI or MI State's opinion. No one else in the CCHA matters.

Again, just like the last post about the Miami-Shegos-bias-dynasty crap, this letter never says that Miami was slighted by a biased referee. It never blames a loss on Shegos.

What does the WCHA think of Miami now? Well, I guess UND is he only team who's opinion matters. The NCAA does all it can to get as many WCHA teams in the tourney and all all but 2 get bounced the first day??? Ouch!
