Color Me Surprised

For the first 64:57 of the game between Minnesota and North Dakota tonight, there was a three way tie for most predictable part of the game, between Minnesota not scoring, Don Adam not being able to control a game, and Jean-Philippe Lamoureux taking dives. By the end of the game, they were all battling for second place.

I'm not even sure why I'm reporting this since it barely qualifies as news anymore, but North Dakota was involved in another fight. Back on November 12th, I wrote this: "If somebody had come up to me on Friday afternoon and said, "Hey, there's going to be two huge fights this weekend. Who do you think will start them?" I would have quickly responded with "North Dakota and the Russians"(FWIW, that's also the answer to "Which two teams are run by the Mafia?")."

In retrospect, I was probably a little harsh on the Russians, since it turns out the better answer to that question is North Dakota and North Dakota.

Here is the video.

In the world of college hockey, it's pretty rare for the Gophers to be the lesser of two evils, but somehow, North Dakota has found a way to make it so. It was actually pretty nice to see Tony Lucia give Darcy Zajac a free lesson on how to hit someone face-to-face.

And then North Dakota managed to take it to the next level by starting a fight during the handshake line. I'm hoping the WCHA will review the incident and come back with a suspension for Joe Finley. First off, it's absolutely unacceptable for someone to be starting things during a handshake line. It's just one of those sacred things in hockey. Second, Finley shouldn't receive much leniency from the WCHA, since it is the second time this season Finley will have been involved in an incident.

And finally, North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol made news for making his views on Don Adam public. He's since apologized. I'm a bit more sympathetic towards Hakstol since just about every WCHA has felt that way about Don Adam. Still, Hakstol is probably better off using his words to express that feeling instead of public gestures.

since woog once got suspended for a non obscene gesture about Wisconsin, I would think that the wcha would have to suspend hakstol for an obscene gesture at an official.

Fair criticism. UND was not innocent. I would claim that the stuff at the end started after a Minnesota cheap shot at Oshie off the face off though. I think the WCHA has 2 choices. Either start calling penalties, or realize that this will happen more and more. In Mankato the fight was preceded by a number of slashes / running the goalie. Call those penalties and perhaps the later doesn't happen. I would have to comment that results talk and UND's playoff record is not a mistake. Hak always makes the F4, so his style is appropriate for college hockey, like it or not. Think about this though. If you hate UND now just wait until next year. They will bring in Hextall and up to 3 defenders 6'2" and above. That is NOT going to reduce the number fights. At the end of the day UND is unbeaten in 9.

So with your criticism of the scrum that resulted on the handshake line, what exactly did you hear and see going through the line. I'm assuming you were actually there to witness it all since you're reporting that UND was responsible for that.

As for Hak and Zajac, there's no excuse for that. They were in the wrong and need to own up to it.

Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter what anyone said in the handshake line. The Gopher could have told Finely that he was Osama bin Laden in disguise - it doesn't matter. Swallow your pride, shake hands, and move on.

If it really bothers you, you can say something back. But you don't deserve any leniency at all for starting something in the handshake line.

Anonymous said...

Agree 100% Chris (and that's rare).

I usually like the style UND plays, and as a Badger fan can't stand the Gophers. But Zajac needed to have his ass kicked, and Finley looked to pull a BS move by yanking Wheeler out of the line.

Would be nice if it'd be legal for a couple guys to just drop 'em and go at it, and that would probably be the end of it.

Of course all criticism of Adam was fair.

UND simply lacks discipline. As was pointed out in this blog post, nobody is shocked when they get involved in this kind of stuff. Their head coach exemplified that last night with his hand gesture and comments and a few of his players simply took their cue from that. Why be in control of your actions and emotions if your head coach can't do it either? I am not saying the Gophers were innocent but they were mainly answering the lame acts of the opponent as opposed to instigating it. I hope the league comes down hard on Hakstol and his squad. These clowns in green need to learn that this isn't what college hockey is all about.

What really started it with 3 seconds left was the crass check on the face off by Carmen, Bickel is a big pussy!

Anonymous said...

You think Gretzky is sitting in a board room right now, scratching his head, and thinking, "what in the hell were my scouts thinking."

Anonymous said...

Listen folks. Every time a incident like this happens UND fans always point their fingers at the other team. But what everyone fails to realize is that the common denominator every time this cheap bush league crap happens is the fighting susans. It's simple math and it's a fact that can not be disputed.

Watch the entire tape -- or spout off like that fathead Kevin Gorg "I saw it all [between bites of my hotdog]" about the on-ice shenanigans. If you can't see the leg trip / knee out by Anderson on Oshie, you don't watch very closely -- or you suffer from Minnesota myopia (a common trait among Goph's fans). TJ has taken shots all year -- just like Zach Parise did a few years ago. Next year, sporting his Blues jersey (as Zach did with his Devils sweater), he can say "at least I'm getting paid to take this abuse now." A reputable source has some interesting video, I am told, that shows WHEELER took the first poke in the handshake line. An that butt-ending puke Stu Bickel is tough shit when he's hiding behind his flat-topped coach and a string of officials. "No f*&%ing class," Stu? Try looking in the mirror. At least we'll be playing in the post-season.

Looks like UND will lose their Nickname.... So lets all help them pick a new one.

Here is a few I think could fit:

The Tractors, The Hicks, The Canadians, The Snowmobilers, The Goons (too obvious), thats all I got for now.

Anonymous said...

Another example of the class or lack there of, that has become far too common place for the boys from und.

Anonymous said...

I do hope lammy didn't hurt himself with that dive. he could have wrenched his back.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone surprised that this kind of horseshit happens at UND games??? This program has a history of this bush league stuff. Hey Sioux fans.....any mystery as to why the rest of the nation can't stand your hockey team and program??? Sioux fans are the most brainwashed assholes out there. This team deserves any criticism it gets.

Anonymous said...

The bottom line is the Sioux and their coaches believe in the NHL type hockey. If you are going to check from behind and it isn't going to get called, you are not going to get off scott free. I would like someone to count the number of "incidents" Minnesota had last year. When was the last time a Minnesota player actually took off there helmets and let'em fly. Minnesota fans sure seem to like Derek Boogard. What Zajac did was stupid, but who stood to be the most frustrated from the weekend, Joe Finley or Blake Wheeler? Wheeler had just cost his team a chance at a powerplay to win the game by being arrogant enough to think he wouldn't get called. He also hurt his team by taking a 10-minute misconduct. Who stood to be most frustrated?

Anonymous said...

My observations of the game:
1. UND goalie - should try The Triple Lindy next weekend.
2. Blake Wheeler- Needs a diaper after joe Finley challenges him to settle a score. Good Luck Harry B getting that out of his breezers.
3. Referee Don Adam- Wished he stayed in Coloado and called the CC/Clarkson game. That way Marco Hunt or Randy Schmidt could lose control of the game instead and be called fools. Where was D Shepard???

Anonymous said...

Sheppard was up in alaska this past weekend.

Scion and You said...

Regardless of whose side you take, it all seems pretty silly to argue about to me. For one thing, there never was an actual fight, mostly just a lot of pushing and shoving. Secondly, people stand and cheer when real fights take place in the NHL. People get irritated after an intense 1-1 tie. Their going to start chirping and poking at each other. Big deal. Believe it or not, there was a time when real fights used to break out. Now I'm not saying we should return to that, but let's all get some perspective here.

Anonymous said...

Relax. As a Sioux fan I am not surprised at all at the situations that arose on Saturday night. I was at the game and I could see that the teams, crowd, and even referees could practically taste the intensity in the air. It was a classic Sioux/Gopher series where emotions boiled over due to the chippy play, the rivalry, lack of scoring (due to incredible goal tending on both sides), and the frustration of the game ending in a tie. I can admit the Sioux get involved in these circumstances more than most, but that's the style of play. It is based on intimidation and a "never back down" attitude. Outside observers may think it is cheap and unnecessary but it is very effective for them. They take penalties, start fights, and talk smack because it lets the current and future opponents know you can't fu** with them and whether they admit it or not that gets in an opponents head. Anyone who's played hockey knows a team's reputation entering a game has a lot to due with how their opponent will approach them. And if a team is known to be unafraid to play in a game that turns pugilistic it can cause their opponent to become hesitant and less physical which creates opportunities for victory that might have not otherwise arose.

Anonymous said...

Blake Wheeler is simply the biggest pussy in the WCHA. And i love watching the Gophers. He costs his team, and then wont back anything up. I would gladly take Hoeffel or Carman over him anyday if i was Gretzky. Blake Wheeler will be in a Gopher uniform next year

Anonymous said...

I was right on the blueline for the hand shakes. Wheeler definitely said something to Choreny, because Chorney, stopped and turned around, shaking his head at wheeler. Wheeler kept skating but he wasn't congratulating his opponents. I leaned over to my buddy and said, "Wheeler is looking for a fight"....the next thing you know....Big Joe grabbed him out of the line. When I watched the replay @ home, the camera only shows Finley grabbing Wheeler. Why even shake hands? I think they should have sent them to their rooms without supper.

Anonymous said...

You could hear on the telecast that Hakstol told Adam that someone took a poke at Finley in the line and that's what started it. I would agree Finley was out of line if he wasn't provoked but but I'm waiting to find out if that's true before making that assumption.

Anonymous said...

Siouxnami, where was that cheapshot on Oshie. Just go get your braces tightened, sit next to that pig you call girlfirend and shut up.

Anonymous said...

Hey Anon Coward...

I don't have braces, and my wife doesn't let me date. Your real brave talking anonymously... Must be a Gopher. I know it must be tough since your pu$$y is hurting, but try to deal with it in a healthy manner...

Anonymous said...

suenami and goon must be having a real bad day. Their miserable lives totally revolve around sue hockey and now that the sue are considered the biggest embarrassments in college hockey they have nothing.

Anonymous said...

Typical Susie BS. It always the other teams fault. Never mind your team is the most penalized team in WCHA year in year out.

As fas as pussies go, why didn't tough-guy, Finley throw punches? Well by Siouxage logic that makes him a big pussy.

Oshie slashed Peltier on Friday and it wasn't called by Adam. Even if he has taken shots from other teams, Oshie is hardly the innocent bystander SS.com tries to make him seem. Maybe he needs to relieve his stress by riding in more elevators. Hopefully Ralph's "Nazi largess" can afford to assign him a full time janitor or spring for the large box of depends.

Anonymous said...

Goofer fans won't admit their team did anything wrong. Shocking!

Hack Carmen goes for Oshie's head out of the faceoff with 3.0 seconds to go, then another goofer hack goes for Oshie's knee with a leg check.

The sioux should have just walked away and let the goofers have at em? Nope, the goofer needed to be reminded that if you mess with the bull, you get the horns...

Anonymous said...

Meh, turn a Clackson loose on Finley and see who's standing after that.

Anonymous said...

People all around the world hate the sioux because unlike any other team out there the sioux stand up for eachother. They arent gonna just be someones bitch. Whether the sioux start it or not u can bet us ass they are gonna finish it.

Anonymous said...

Oh my #%$#% God siouxnami. You need a heavy dose of reality. cheapshot at Oshie off the faceoff? You have watched hockey before haven't you? Get your sister off your lap and watch how real men play hockey. If someone wanted Oshie's head they could have taken it. Blind Susie idiot fans. That was probably you sitting in the row behind me Firday night calling your firends saying the Sioux dominated the first perioid. I wish natural selection would find its way to ND.

As far as the rough stuff. ND is cheap. They always will be cheap with Hack-stol. Wouldnt surprise me if they practice cheapshots. Finley averages 10 slashes and crosschecks away from the puck at game. Kudos to him that he gets away with it and intimidates people. His day will come. he tries that stuff in teh AHL (as far as he will ever get) and you will find that he spends alot more time in the training romm for 'er, my leg hurts, i cant go'

Suprised at the criticism of Wheeler regardign the overtime penalty. Our powerplay is HORRIBLE! We would not have scored and you cant let Sue stand over your player like that. Adam should have sent them both. Oh well.

Credit Sue for being a tough little B@%tch but she wont last long in the tourney when the Eastern refs start calling all of their crap.

Props to 'Lammy'. Hes the reason the Sue are where they are.

Anonymous said...

Jeez I guess Gopher fans are blinded by there own teams antics. I always laugh when they always talk about the big bad Sioux being cheap. I guess you didn't watch the game?

I attended the series and BOTH teams were being cheap. Hell the Gophers were grabbing and hooking Oshie as if the penalties of Holding and Hooking never EXISTED. And after ever whistle Gopher players would slash sticks with a Sioux player. Which I know Sioux players did the same right back.

And Wheeler should have gotten his ass kicked. He was running his mouth both games. But like a typical Gopher he can't back up his mouth. I can't wait until he's in the NHL. It's going to be a real awakening for him.

But of course the Gophers are angels and deserve there halos. Cause as always all blame goes on the Sioux. The fact remains that the Sioux got 3 of 4 points.

Lost in all of the excitement is this. How big of a p@#$y must Zajac have to be to get his a@# handed to him by Lucia. Guess the fighting susie name fits in this instance.

Anonymous said...

If you call getting thrown to the ice as getting his @$$ handed to him then thats pretty funny. Zajac was the one landing most if not all of the punches made. Hell I wouldn't even call it a fight more like grapple match for the most part though Zajac did land a couple of punches before Lucia threw him to the ice.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Zajac got it "handed" to him... Funny part is, he'll probably get a pro contract, (probly not to the big show) and Lucia-pet Jr MIGHT end up as an assistant college coach, assuming daddy has an open spot. I don't fault Tony for sticking up for his teammate, not one bit. That is what Zajac was doing, and it doesn't matter what any of us think. The Sioux are TOUGH, and the Goofs need to be that way too. To call them cheap is a load of crap, especially in a league where the refs are more concerned with league parity than they are with the safety of the players and calling the game by the rules. And just in case I show on here as anonymous, you can call me Josh J.

Anonymous said...

I was at both games and like usual the Gophers start crap and then go running away when they have to back it up. Peltier goes after Trupp on the ice, but won't go toe to toe when Radke challenges him. Wheeler runs his mouth all weekend, but won't step up to Kaip, Genoway or Finley when he is challenged. Typical goofer antics and fans. Call ND fans every name in the book, but I guess that is all you have for ammo when you haven't beat UND at home in YEARS!!! Have fun on the road rodents. Sioux will be at home no matter what name calling you use this time. Wheeler is a great pick by #99 they were both little girls who need McSorely or Bickel to stand up for them. PATHETIC.

I am really surprised at the one-sided nature of this blog. I usual find the posts here to be informative with very little bias interjected; but of course that is all changed now. I understand that fans of either team are going to see it completely opposite. The facts are both sides committed some acts that were less than savory and deserved reactions and in some cases maybe some additional actions. Bottom line is that finger pointing needs to go both ways and that once again folks, this is hockey and some of these things happen. Events like this take place in other conferences and in other games, so why label one team that way.
I would hope that this blog tried to maintain some objectivity in the future; yes I know you have every right to be biased, but I, like many others enjoyed reading useful information about many teams, not just criticism of a few.

Like many of you I was at the game. While Anderson may have hit Oshie he didn't seem to care, he was showing a little class and just skating away as the game was over, then Zajac comes in and delivers the hit that starts it all. If Oshie really felt like he recieved a cheap shot then wouldn't he have been the first one to want to fight? As it stands Zajac is a goon.

Anonymous said...

First time here. It seem that everyone seem to have an opinion about how cheap UND is. College hockey needs to have more of this as a whole. NCAA need to allow the fighting. That way teams can not instigate fights. It really easy for team to know what players are on the bubble and can get in trouble for fighting. This weekend in Minney was what has been going on for years between these two teams. Both teams are to blame. The WCHA needs to get a better handle on game. It the refs would get it under control to start with you would see less incidents.
On an other note. If you have something to say I think you should at least post a name, not just anonymous. Get a set.

The Sioux are not perfect and the Gophers are sure as hell not either but I guess those Gopher fans with there maroon & gold glasses can keep thinking that.

Hey I was at the games this weekend and I noticed something strange prior to the handshake line that I have not seen before. Two Gopher players tossed their gloves prior to going into the line. Given what we know now about the scrum that took place. Was the tossing of gloves a sign? or just a normal activity that I had not noticed before?

And about the MSU game fight this year.. that was a direct result of a game last year when those two team meet. I believe Kiap got a 2 min penalty for being a punching bag. MSU was trying to start the fight but Kiap did not respond because of the game DQ associated with fighting. To the gentleman who wrote this blog ... you might need to do just a bit more rearch prior to writing your column.. have some standards. Overall both games were very good this weekend and lot of what is going on is the pot calling the kettle black. Both team played with an edge. It was great hockey with poor officating.

I feel Don Adam needs to have a suspension from the wcha for losing total control of the whole game. It all started with the Duncan game misconduct. Chris isn't objective, he doesn't have much of a clue and he cheers for the Mavericks from Mankato which is just as dirty as any team. Remember Bruess, he tried to say that Kaip caused the fight, when both players were both show taking off their helmets.

And true to form the Mavericks will be bounced from the WCHA playoffs in the first round, probably by the Sioux again and all we will hear is how UND is a bunch of hacks and goons

The Baron said...

Watch the tape of the entire game including the Peltier/Trupp incident in which the refs stood with their thumbs up their hole until Malone pulled him off - then the Gophers get a power play. The real story here is the incredibly bad officiating that we get in the WCHA. With all of the clutching, grabbing, hooking, and holding allowed it's no wonder things get chippy. They have turned WCHA hockey into soccor on ice with a huge lack of scoring. By the way, both sides were involved in this game - the Sioux just are willing to man up instead of cheap shoting and hiding. Next time you want to rip the Sioux, take care to examine all of the facts or shut your pie hole.

Anonymous said...

If you watch the entire tape, you will discover that the trouble was started by Peltier's mugging of Trupp while the refs stood with their thumbs up their holes - When Malone pulled him off, incredibly the Gophers ended up with the power play. You missed the big pucture here - the WCHA refs are incredibly incompetent - with all of the mugging, clutching, grabbing, and interference allowed they have made WCHA hockey resemble soccer on ice - no scoring at all. No wonder both teams are frustrated. The Gophers were as chippy as the Sioux, but the Sioux were willing to man up. Next time you decide to bash the Sioux, get all the facts or shut your pie hole.

Sioux fans need to seriously take a hard, long look at themselves in the mirror. Picking fights and making threats on a blog? You honestly wonder why everyone in the WCHA hates your fan base? You also keep talking about how tough player "A" is for UND and how player "B" for another team is a coward for not dropping their gloves. Yet I only saw UND players playing grab ass all weekend also? Is Finley a coward also??? Since when did chirping during a game become something that deserves a beating??? UND has had a long line of talkers (J. Blake, Prp, etc...) and those guys are considered hero's in grand forks. I am guessing you guys wouldn't have thought it was O.K. for your opponents to fight them every saturday because they ran their mouths throughout the weekend? Get a clue, take a breath and consider some anger management classes. Also, swearing in a blog doesn't get your point across any stronger, it just opens you up to more hick and hillbilly jokes.

Hey, guess who has the longest unbeaten streak in the nation...

Guess who has been to the F4 the last 3 seasons...

Maybe we are doing something better than other programs...

And guess whos choked on the big wooley one the last three f4's?

Zajac should have gotten at least another game suspension for causing that incident at the end of the game.

Blake Wheeler doesn't need to goon it up, but he does have to quit acting like a pussy. If you are going to run around the ice hacking people and talking shit the whole game, you had better expect to be challenged. I wish the rest of my fellow Gopher fans would realize this as well.

hey pioneer fan i would be a little bit concerned about your team because guess what they arent playing so hot. Maybe they should take some pointers on how to play hockey from und since they are winning. This is hockey you fool not basketball. This has always been apart of hockey and will remain in the game of hockey.

The Sioux are a bunch of Hitler loving goon assholes. The fact that the guy who built their arena was a bonified NAZI LOVER would make me ashamed of setting foot into that NHL style arena. Soiux fans say that the GOphers should toughen up and fight....um if you knew the rules you would know that fighting will get you suspended in college hockey. They also wonder why the guy was tossed into the box "not very nicely", well when you have Sioux players who have alwyas been known as being cheap and loving fights you can't really blame the ref for wanting to get that little Hitler Youth off the ice as soon as possible. Maybe the Sioux should learn to get some thicker skin so when people jaw at them they don't cry and whine and then goon it up. There is NO excuse for Finley to start a fight during the handshakes, TOTAL DISRESPECT, but then again Hitler did not have respect either for most people. Hope the Sioux do lose their name, if I was a native american I would be ashamed to have a bunch of classless goon hacks representing.

Chris's blog being mistaken for Heisenberg...That's pretty funny.

Pioneer fan has a very rational post and it should be good advice for all of us to consider in how we conduct ourselves, whether that be on a message board or in public interacting with other people.

All I can say is WOW...I can't believe the things I read on this post...Numerous attacks on the Sioux's tribal name?...By posting words like "susie" you are only spreading hate.

"Nazi Lovers"...you have got to be joking...I really can't believe I just read that. What year are we in??? You should be ashamed of yourself for calling Grand Forks citizens Nazi Lover's, we are probably the friendliest community the WCHA possesses...I will pray for you.

It's no suprise to me that the Lakota tribe will not give support of their name being used by UND...this post has made it perfectly clear. The tribe doesn't want their name dragged through the dirt.

By the way, MI 9, that's cute...Michigan won 6 of those titles in the first ten years or so of organized college hockey. Nice try though.

UND may be hated for the way they play the game..but they play with teamwork, speed, and tanacity...all of which make the best hockey to watch. And fights are every hockey fan's guilty pleasure..if you can't handle it...watch some squeek squeek.

Ok, so MI won most of them in the 1st 10 years, UND won with a squad full of nucks. A win is a win. Suck it.

If you support tRalph you are supporting Nazi's

Anderson's attempted leg-check on Oshie was completely bush league. That type of hit could have ended Oshie's career. I don't blame Zajac one bit for going after the cheap punk, in fact I would have lost all respect for him had he not. Players need to protect their teammates, otherwise every team in the league will pull that garbage. The WCHA's finest certainly can't be counted on to police a game, so the players need to police themselves.

That hit on Zajac earlier in the game wasn't checking from hehind either was it? I could teach a poodle to ref a game better than the clowns officiating in the WCHA. The finest conference in college hockey year in and year out has the worst officiating at any level of hockey I've ever seen. This is the real tragedy....

Kelly from GF

Ok... let me get this straight... so if someone supports the Ralph, they would therefore support the Nazi party....right. That is just the sort of ignorant thinking I would expect to hear from an anonymous post.

Generalization such as this has no merit, I just don't understand how you could get so worked up reading a post and begin to pick apart and discredit the entire UND fan base. We are decent people, with cause to be proud of our Hockey club (ok, maybe a little to proud, dare I say it...snobish, sure).

If you would have paid attention in history class, you would have learned that United States of America was founded...scratch that...taken from the Native American Indians by means of manipulation, corruption, and genocide. So you accusing me of supporting the Nazi party by simply enjoying a Hockey game at a great facility, would be the same as me saying that you support genocide by being an American citizen, which I am sure is not the case.

The Fighting Sioux nickname is one of the few in organized sports that actually stands for something. In the beginning, it was a good name that coincided with destroying our rival the NDSU Bison in athletics. The UND forefathers who chose the name did so because the Sioux stood out in history as a proud and tanacious tribe. What most of the UND students and Alumni didn't know at the time was that Sioux actually meant "Snake in the Grass" and the name was given to the Lakota(Sioux)tribe by a rival indian nation.

I personally have a lot of pride in the Fighting Sioux name, and portray that patriotism with dignified and respectful actions. The Sioux name, to me, is a constant reminder of the awful things my ancestors have done.

You sir, sit upon your soap box and insult my city which you have probably never been to by calling us "Jew Haters" and "Nazi supporters" You write with no accountability and complete amnesty, portraying your hatred in a predudice manner.

Your right, MI has a great hockey club, as well as an excellent fan base for their athletics. And, like the Sioux have come up a bit short the last couple years.

I am sick and tired of everyone saying how brainwashed and arogant Sioux hockey fans are. Grand Forks has a population of about 50,000, and on an average night, our arena is filled with 10,000+ Sioux fans. So you tell me where in D-1 college hockey there is a team that has that ratio of fans to local population...you just can't. UND Hockey is basically considered a professional sport in North Dakota and for that we should be proud. Eveyrone could at least agree with me on that.

Yes, you have people show up since there is nothing else to do in GF, besides burning crosses and klan rallies

Sioux are people not Mascots!

go back to the UND Flickertails

Anon 6:19--

Blah, blah, blah. "UND hockey is basically considered a professional sport"........

That's your problem dude. Sioux fans have a completely warped perspective, it's a joke. The Sious aren't pros, they are 18-22 year old college kids. Everything up there revolves around ND hockey--that's not healthy, and it makes for a very insecure, overzealous fan base. When you have nothing else to follow or hang your hat on, that's what happens. Most other arenas are enjoyable to attend because there is friendly ribbing and give and take with the opposing fans, but that rarely happens in GF. Sioux fans are so defensive. Again, it's warped perspective. That's the problem. Sioux fans don't understand it because their world is so narrow.

...its funny that many of these posts ridicule UND for its fighting and "goonlike" behavior. Yet, I read on to find more and more personal insults on people who have no more envolvment to hockey than the interest of watching and cheering their favorite team to victory.

If you are going to chastise UND for playing chipy or fighting all the time, maybe you should think twice before posting such ignorant and hateful comments towards myself or my hometown. I can take your insults all day long, and by the end it all, I am the bigger person for not buying into it.

I read on a previous post that these blogs are meant for information...not a place to insult fellow hockey enthusiasts, their teams maybe, but don't insult them personally. It shows a lack of character and doesn't earn respect.

Ultimately, we are all hockey fans and most of us prefer the WCHA...so at the very least we all have that in common. If UND fails and another WCHA team is still going for a national championship, I will definately cheer for them, unless it is the Gophers, sorry I have to draw the line somewhere.

Our mindset isn't warped...its merely focused on one thing only...winning a National Championship year in and year out. And that is what other fans don't seem to understand, its Sioux pride and tradition.

You may be right about us hanging our hat on only one thing, but saying that there isn't ribbing or give and take at our facility is wrong. You may have to look a little harder, but it does exist.

I've been to Wisconsin and the fans there really impress me...they cheer loud, have fun, and there is plenty of give and take between UND/WISC fans in my experience...maybe not so much for the players on the ice but that is a different story.

I have not been to every WCHA arena but plan to sometime in my life...I have been to SCSU, UMD, WIS, F5, and the Frozen Four. The only negative experience with other fans I have witnessed is with the Gophers.

Our oldest rivalry with NDSU outweighs the one we have with the gophers by a long shot...Still the Bison fans have been civil throughout the years, a great rivalry.

I don't know when, why, or how it went sour, but the UND/UM relationship for some reason is more of a hatred...I love that MN players come to play in GF and I hold the utmost respect for UM's hockey club...but dislike them immensly at the same time.

Anderson's leg check? Could end Oshie's career? You must be joking. Barely any contact between the two and if you think that was enough to end anyone's career you are exaggerating to the point of absurdity. Did you expect Anderson to step aside and allow Oshie to shoot the puck?

The heights that many NoDak fans want to go to in order to justify Zajac's behavior is absolutely stunning. TJ must be pretty fragile if that kind of contact could end his career. Try to be a little more honest in how you portray what appeared to be slow motion contact. Zajac's cheap shot on Anderson is just another example of how NoDak has always played the game. No surprises really for anyone that has watched college hockey for any length of time. Starts right at the top.

All of the swearing on the prior comments by NoDak fans are pretty funny too. Is Hakstol merely a reflection of the NoDak fans or are the NoDak fans a reflection of the Head coach? Is Coach Hakstol just giving the fans in Grand Forks what they want? Seems he is apparently.

At the end of the day I think the local Sioux tribes will look upon that type of behavior exhibited by coach Hakstol as reflecting poorly on their heritage. Look for that incident to by a deciding factor in the loss of the Sioux nickname. Reap what you sow.

Holy non-sequiter chief, what does something that happened five years ago out on the street have to do with a discussion about a hockey game last weekend? So a couple of drunk idiots torch a couple of dumpsters and that correlates to what? I surely didn't condone that behavior but it is more of an anomaly than a typical occurance.

I can confidently state I've seen more Gopher/Sioux games than you have and what happened last weekend was tame in comparison to many games from the past. The games did however go quite a bit to form. (the Sioux initiated more cheap shots from behind than the Gophers, see Duncan cfb, Finley cross check from behind, Zajac cross check from behind to name a few)

It is a statistical certainty that the Sioux will start more of the cheap stuff than the Gophers. The Gophers, however will certainly provide their share in that regard. Think of this and apply it to what goes on between these two teams. "For every action there is an equal opposite reaction". That can be a pretty good predictor of how things have gone with these two teams. Most of the time the Sioux have been the ones initiating the nonsense.

It is pretty funny how Frattin is being portrayed as an innocent bystander being accosted by Peltier. I guess you must have missed the high stick to the chin that removed Peltiers helmet. Details, details.

A good physical game doesn't bother me in the least and I'm sure it doesn't bother the Gophers or the Sioux for that matter. What is pretty funny though is how much whining Sioux fans do about how other teams are abusing their players while at the very same time applauding their players for doing the very same thing to their opposition. Get a grip dude.
