Wisconsin's Appeal Denied

Bill Hudson, head of the WCHA Faculty Athletic Representatives ruled that Wisconsin's appeal to have the outcome of last Friday's game changed, has been denied, much like the goal they scored that should have counted.

They cited a rule from the NCAA rulebook stating that their can be no appeal to a referee's decision. I'm pretty sure there's also a rule in there about pucks going into the net during play counting as a goal, but it's a thick book, and I can't say I've read all of it.

Overall, it's probably the right decision though. Sadly, if we started handing out points and replaying games any time a video review was messed up in the WCHA, it would be chaos. Not only would it open up a can of worms for the future, but also for the past, since St. Cloud State had also received an apology from the WCHA for a blown video replay in a one-goal loss.

Well said.

This wasn't unexpected, even as a Badger fan I wasn't expecting anything to be done about this. I'm going to be far more disappointed in the WCHA if Schmidt continues to officiate games, but given the WCHA's track record I'm not holding out hope.

A birdie informed me that Schmidt was taken off assignments after the SCSU incident.

If that birdie is correct, the punishment here is probably going to be a bit more severe, either in terms of games being missed or an overall firing.

Pepsi Center in Denver better get their replay system working at its utmost capability. If this happens during the Frozen 4, I hate to even think about that mess..... If the ref is looking at total crap when he goes to the scorer's table, and TV can see it as plain as day, can TV call the scorers table with the correct call? Also, is there any word that DU officials knew what Schmidt was looking at was totally wrong and said nothing?

Pepsi is an NHL arena--I think it's safe to assume that the replay system works fine there and every angle will be covered.

From what I've gathered, the replay system at Magness Arena at DU works just fine too. The system was not at fault. It was the ref who only looked at a still frame after the puck had gone and then come back out. He saw the puck sitting outside the line and called it no goal. Instead of looking at the actual replay he just saw the still frame.

No surprise on the appeal denial, but hopefully the action will bring about some positive change, namely Schmidt getting the boot. I don't think any WCHA fans or teams want to see him anymore--he has no credibility left. I'd be no less pissed than any Badger fan if this incident had ocurred the other way around and DU had gotten shafted.

Except this kind of thing affects Wisco's chances of making the NCAA tournament much more than it would to Denver's.

How will DU get their points if Schmidt is not working????????

if the Gophers would have been shafted on a goal like that I wonder if the response would have been... "we didn't want that goal" he he

8:03...Good stuff, nutsack. Be careful on the monkey bars at recess today.

There's a WCHA Rule prohibiting replay officials saying anything or influencing the referee.

Hockey East allows officials to use TV replays from the broadcasts.

Hey Zooomx-

You must not watch too many Gophers games, because we always have the refs in our back pocket....I won't deny it! So your point in not applicable.

Now if this were the Packers, than the drunkin Sconi's would have the ref in their back pocket, or Favra would at least... he's just so precious...hahahaha!

They were right not to award Wisconsin a point. But what the morons should have done was play that damn overtime before the next's night's game and let the players decide the proper result on the ice.

How was this not the obvious solution? They admitted the no-goal call was an error 2 hours before game time the next day.

Jim,

Because I guess the NCAA doesn't want to play extra time the next day/week/month in NCAA baseball, basketball, sailing, fencing and every other sport each time some bozo blows a call and there is instant replay contradicting the call.

Fair & Balanced, think harder. Surely your mind can grasp the conceptual difference between a mistaken call which post-hoc replay confirms, and a horribly botched use of sport-sanctioned replay review.

Second, surely your mind can grasp the conceptual difference between bluntly trying to re-play games where mistakes happen, and playing an OT period in a circumstance where the missed call occred at the 0:00 mark at the end of a game which should have gone to OT. It's not as if this was a review in the 2nd period where you couldn't possibly say what might have transpired had the call been made properly. That makes this situation extremely unusual, and easy to remedy.

JIM, you're sooooo smart, the NCAA should call you for advice.
