Badger Shutdown

I understand that Wisconsin's best sniper, Kyle Turris, is off at the World Juniors, but still, how did Wisconsin managed to miss 8 consecutive penalty shots to lose their shootout with Colgate?

Incidentally, as Todd Milewski points out, they didn't even follow the proper protocol for the shootout. Luckily, Colgate's Tyler Burton scored on his second attempt to put an end to the game. Speaking of shootout rules, I think that if neither team had scored in ten attempts, they should have turned the lights in the building off, and made both teams play in the consolation game the next day.

As a Badger fan who saw the game on tv it was a sad sad shootout. Most shots were even close and they tried 5-hole way too many times. Probably the most boring shootout I've ever seen since the women's olympics.

Hey, this isn't as bad as the Lucia led Gophers losing to RIT. Yes R.I.T. Lucia's wonderful recruits couldn't beat a college hockey team that offers no scholarships. Face it....Lucia has turned into a lousy coach and recruiter and should be fired. And don't give me this crap about the gophers losing players to the world juniors. They lose players every time during the holiday tournament and still managed to win previously. Something very wrong is going on with Lucia and the Gophers hockey program. RIT....RIP.

And then Boston College beat RIT 6-0. Gopher hockey is badly broken and there is no fix in sight for at least a couple of years. Lucia is like Wes Walz...was decent at his craft but he has lost his fire and ability. Time to retire.

What about the gophers tying Air Force. What a mess that gopher team has become. BC beat Air Force 8-2. And these were home games for the gophers. Lucia really had his team up for this tournament. What a total embarrassment for Minnesota hockey. Of course Lucia has always been able to come up with excuses.

Johnson and Goligoski leave early, but not unexpectedly. O'Brien and Okposo leave, both huge surprises. Carman misses the first half because of academics. Stoa doesn't even finish the first game and is out for the rest of the season. The Gophers are starting three Freshmen D-men. I realize how much hate there is for the Gophers, but do you really believe any other coach could have done better?

Eaves had hands down the best recruiting class in the nation and his team is one game over .500. Hakstol has a Hobey winner, Oshie, Chorney, and a Senior Goalie whose GAA is 1.88 and UND is still only two games over .500.

The Gophers are having a mediocre season which is atypical. Maybe they turn it around, maybe not.

It must have been UW's third jerseys. They say you are the way you dress, so perhaps it's no surprise UW's shootout was realllly ugly.

Glad they only wear the alternates for one weekend a year...

They wear the third jerseys at the CHS when they are at home as well.

the wcha has always seemed as upperclassmen league its tough to have to replace so many losses with freshmen in the WCHA though I do think Lucia has lost a step maybe some one younger would be a good thing for the gophs.

Yeah....times have changed and maybe Lucia needs a change also. I would not at all be disappointed to see a new younger head coach for the Gophers.

What's funny is people have Lucia's head on the chopping block. What about Eaves?

Hakstol is a poor man's Doug Woog. Despite having guys like Oshie, Chorney, Duncan, and Finley decline pro deals last summer, Hakstol has managed to lead his team to a stellar current record of 2 games above .500. When you combine that fact with his inability to win big games, I'd say he has also ran coach written all over him.

At least Lucia and Eaves have managed to do something with their talent. Their teams may be down a bit in talent this year but at least they know how to capitalize when they do have the players. Hakstool can't even manage to do that. lol!

Fan's from opposing teams are ALWAYS the best source for advice on making a coaching change. Kind of like Jimmy Carter or Walter Mondale giving advice to Ronald Reagan on how to win a Presidential election.

UW down on talent is an excuse. They have had the top two recruiting classes in the past two years.UW can't find playing time for former Mr.hockey and another player who was two time USHL all-star, talent can't be questioned. ND, MN, and UW need to figure out the team game. these three teams are loaded with talent but need to play to their ablility. that might be the coaching questions at all three programs. Loaded with talent and not winning. coaches need to look in mirror and figure out their jobs.

While Hakstol does not have a title, it's pretty hard to argue against taking your team to 3 straight frozen fours in your first 3 yrs. Now, why he can't lead his team to solid records before Christmas should be alarming to Sue fans.

Well, at least MN and Lucia will get to claim the WJC medal, since they provided the most players to that team. what's a loss and a tie compared to winning for your country.

Anonymous said...

Typical MN comment on WJC. Claiming your Country's medal, which by the way hasn't happened yet. It would be a USA medal for your country, not Lucy and his pompous high school kids from MN.
No I, in Team medals.

Lucia lost his holiday tournament and could have easily lost to powerhouse Air Force after losing to powerhouse RIT. Losing a few players to the world juniors is an excuse. When a team that offers NO scholarships beats you on your home ice, your program is in trouble. Not a single game does a season make, but I bet the Gophers will end below ND and Wisconsin in the standings. Of course Lucia has a job for life, or at least as long as milktoast Maturi leads the athletic department. I predict ND and Wisconsin will have a much better 2nd half of the season while the gophers will still stink up the joint.

Wisc. also lost in their own tournament to a team that doesn't offer scholarships, Colgate fits that profile too.

Anon 10:50....Your comments regarding TDon and UMTC claiming the WJC medal is exactly why every other program in the country can't stand the U of M or its fans. The arrogance that surrounds that program is unreal, and it was echoed in your comments. I see another one of your football players got tossed into crowbar hotel for assault.....what a model institution you are.

Wisconsin tied Colgate dumbass. RIT wasn't even D-1 four years ago!

"Well, at least MN and Lucia will get to claim the WJC medal, since they provided the most players to that team"

Better check your facts: Minnesota & MICHIGAN both have the most with 3. Hell who don't we give Wisconsin a medal since they have Canada the most college players.

"While Hakstol does not have a title, it's pretty hard to argue against taking your team to 3 straight frozen fours in your first 3 yrs"

In other words, he is just like Doug Woog but without the regular season success. lol

Anon 10:50....in regards to your thinking, when Canada hammers the U.S. on Friday, are you going to come on here apologize to all U.S. fans because your Goofers cost our country a medal?

Anonymous said...

Not all gopher fans think they are gods gift to hockey. Only a select few and Don Lucia

Dave Woogstol!!!

Anon 10:50, 3 rodents on the team that has a 22 man roster. Get your head out of your rat anus.

Canada isn't as dominating as they have been in year's past. I think the U.S., even though some consider the worst U.S. team on paper the last couple years, has a great shot at winning this thing.

Anonymous said...

Mediocre Canada is better than solid U.S....that's a no brainer

Unknown said...

Absolutely. I mean, after that horrible blow out last year against Canada's loaded team, it's amazing the USA is even showing up this time around. For God's sake, they couldn't even last 10 rounds in that shootout! What losers!

Anonymous said...

Never said we were losers, I just think Canadian hockey is superior to the U.S.

...and by the way, regardless of what the talent level was in last years game, who won?

Anonymous said...

And how many more Canadiens play hockey than Americans. It's about 5-2. The put a ton of more $$$ into their programs too. It's their sport. It's actually pretty sad that didn't win it more often in the past. Kinda like U.S. National basketball fiasco over the last few years.
