The Scouting Process

Andy Baggot of the Wisconsin State Journal wrote a very interesting piece on Wisconsin's scouting process that is worth a read.

recruiting is a job, like many other jobs it requires travel and time away from home. Ask an accounting auditor, or a sales person about the days and nights away. look at the lives these guys affect. how about the 16 or 17 year old they "advise" to move away from home for development, or delay coming in a year due to wanting more development in jrs. The travel comes with hockey as we know it today. How about the Cal. or southern players who have gone to prep school to get that schollie. hockey is a game of sacrifice for the love of the game. These guys get paid though.

Wow, wouldn't have thought they'd have a list of over 500 guys. Yes they only seriously go after 20-40 but dang that's a lot of players.
I mean if it's that many for hockey, it makes you wonder how big a list might be for football

Eaves' own kid left early from BC. Hockey at JR.A on is a business and many of the coaches having to deal with players leaving for "development" or the pros are the same coaches who are using players 17 or 18 through 25 to build their winning records. If these coaches truly cared about the kids they have coached more would come out with degrees. How many players who used up their four years of eligiblity graduated from ND, WI, or MN lately in those four years or even given a fifth?

Wisconsin in the last few years, Burish, Dowell, Elliott, Bourque all graduated in four years and all have spent time in the NHL. These are just the players that have played in the NHL, many others have also graduated in the last few years.
