Grieco to OHL

The Grand Forks Herald is reporting that North Dakota goalie Anthony Grieco has left the team and will play for Mississauga in the OHL.

It's probably not a huge loss for North Dakota. Grieco struggled as a freshman while Jean-Phillippe Lamoureux was out with an injury, and prospects of playing much this season looked grim with Jean-Phillippe Lamoureux playing so well to start the season. After Lamoureux graduates, the Sioux will bring in a top goalie prospect in Brad Eidsness, so Grieco's chances of playing much didn't look great.

Walk-on Aaron Walski will now be the back-up for Lamoureux.

This will be an issue if Lameroux gets injured

Wisconsin struggled mightly when Elliott went down and a raw and inexperenced freshman had to step into his place. Elliott had to return befor he was 100% and MSU shelled him (and those games may have cost him the Hoby and first team WCHA, but that's another rant). Eaves was criticized (correctly) for not having a capable and experenced backup when he brought in a goaltending project.

Walski is a Jr this y ear so his game shouldn't be freshman raw, but that doesn't mean he is a WCHA caliber goaltender and his 40+ MINUTES of time in 2 games does not enspire confidence.

I expect teams to crash the net and UND to defend it with a terrible ferocity. But even if Lammy doesn't get hurt (which is something I'd wish on no player), how will he deal with the grind (both physical and mental) of playing each and every game. I'm sure that he played more then 40 games in a season of jrs, but it has been a few years.

I wouldn't call Shane Connelly as a freshman a project, he just wasn't ready for WCHA caliber play.

I think that is the reason Gudmandson got some time already, though I would venture to say that Scott is a better player as a frosh than Connelly, though Shane was far from a project or walk on status.

Another NCAA reject to the CHL

Connelly was a project, he was a talented recruit but he needed to have his game adjusted to be sucessful at the WCHA level and that involved breaking him of bad habits. that is Shane had to go back before he could go forward and become a WCHA calibler goaltender. He wasn't ready to play and UW didn't have a solid backup in case something happened to Elliott. UND is now in the same position, let's hope that it does not become an issue for them.
