Select 15 Festival Report

I have finished my Select 15 Festival report. You can read it here.

And also, some people had asked for this after the Select 17s, so I decided to try and pick the top 5 forwards and top 5 defenseman at the Select 15s. Here they are:

Top 5 forwards
1. Luke Moffatt-Stats weren’t great, but he’s got a ton of talent.
2. Matt Nieto-One of the few kids whose talent translated into points
3. Chase Balisy-Wasn’t overly flashy, but a very solid player
4. Brent Darnell-Did everything except score a lot.
5. Austin Watson-Maybe not the best player at the camp, but very easily could be the best two or three years from now.

Top 5 defenseman

1. Jon Merrill-Easily the best player on the ice
2. Brandon Archibald-Not a complete package yet, but all the tools are there
3. Jason Binkley-Very good player
4. Brandon Russo-Didn’t make very many mistakes
5. Stephen Johns-Has the potential to be very, very good.

Finally, Jon Merrill and Luke Moffatt have both received offers to play for the NTDP next season.

I notice you didn't write about the leading scorer of the tournament on the green team? Did he stand out to you at all?

Why did Chase Balisy choose to play for the jr canadians?

Chris said...

If I'm not mistaken, Balisy is a native-Californian(and dual citizen) that moved to the Toronto-area to try and further his hockey career. The Jr. Canadiens are one of the top teams in North America.

In my haste to get the report posted, I realized that I forgot comments for Michael Mersch and Brandon Archibald. Those have now been added.

Jon Merrill and Luke Moffatt

Both players are leaning toward Major A.

Is'nt Matt Nieto a 2011 recruit?

Chris said...

According to my program, he was born on 11/5/92, but was a high school freshman last year. So technically, he could be a 2010 recruit if he continued on the same education path, but he'll be in the 2011 draft.

What schools are close to landing Nieto?

Anonymous said...

The schools in the WHL.

Anonymous said...

The WHL doesn't have schools

Anonymous said...

Sure they do.

Most send HS aged players to Prep Schools and pick up the cost. After HS they pick-up 100% of your college waile your playing in the WHL.

What are the names of the prep schools in Moose Jaw?

Anonymous said...

Holy Trinity Catholic Schools

in Moose Jaw, Anywhere else?

What if you are not Catholic?

Dalton Spicer was a top kid there on defence I think. He didn't put up any points but he was good skill wise. He has oen of the best hands I think out there for a defenceman. His size isn't all there but wait he'll shoot up and will put all his abilities together and be a complete package.

Dalton Spicer is a talented defencemen. He doesn;t have size yet but it will come. He's a young 92 but showed a lot of talent at the festival this year

Anonymous said...

Dalton Spicer was not even close to the best defen(s)emen there had terrible hands. so the person who was the same person that spelt defensemen wrong on 4 posts is full of it.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand why, but i've watched Dalton Spicer and he can play. Whoever thinks or said he doesn;t have good hands is stupid enough not to know its not a big tool for a defensemen. Alll I know is he can play and if you kids tha are talking can't even play, let alone in general then you shouldn't say stuff like that. It doesn't make sense.

From what i've been hearing, he's getting intrest from schools. I think he wants to play for UND, but I heard he;s intrested in Minnesota-Duluth.

I wonder when he was blessed with this oppourtunity to speak with these coaches because if it was at any sort of camp what so ever then those schools should probably get in some truoble because he is only 15. and im pretty sure a 5'6'' defensemen that isnt offensive is probably not going to be getting looks from d-1 schools quite yet dont get me wrong could turn into a good player with work but not yet.

Uhh it would be a good idea to have a set of hands if your gunna play at a high level haha. u might be in trouble in that kind of game without

Anonymous said...

hands are overrated

Anonymous said...

A. Well first off, he;s pretty close to 5'9 and he did get attention. I jsut don't like when you guys say stuff and you probably don't even play. And another thing you probably didn't play for the select camp. But in the long run, it will be alright. Just wait.

Hands are overrated. But he has exceptionally good hands. His smarts on the ice are well up their. On the other hand his puck moving skills are quite well also. His size is coming but he plays the game with a tough edge. He lateral movements and foot speed is very good. His size will also have time to develop too.

i dont knoe how you all think he is so good, when he was the fourth or fifth defenseman for a north dakota high school team who finishes 3rd in the state.

why didnt this defensemen who has been looked at and talked to by UND and UMD not get drafted in the futures draft then
