Two More Shattuck Alums

Two Shattuck-St. Mary's alums will also be heading to the BCHL next year. HT Lenz and Justin Thomas will be playing for the Merritt Centennials next season.

Best of luck to them out west.

Chris,

Why are all the SSM's kids heading to the BCHL instead of the USHL?

because they aren't good enough to play in hte USHL

I don't know about that. Ryan Duncan and Chay Genoway both went to the BCHL from SSM and, though Genoway isn't exactly at Ryan Duncan's level, neither are doing too badly.

I'm wondering if it might come down to promised role, playing time, and playing style? Though it is a dangerous route to try to go somewhere where you will only work on your strengths, it might be what some choose to do.

Goalie from Shattuck U-16 team has made Lincoln in USHL and will be heading to NE

I remember Duncan stated he would only play in the USHL if it was for Lincoln, and then he was drafted by Omaha.

ryan-

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. In any case, it didn't hurt my point. For wingers, the BCHL may be the best place to be because of how offensive minded the league seems to be. Now, the bad thing is that it may not translate well to the next level. Sure, Duncan and Travis Zajac's BCHL numbers and play translated to DI well, but so far Kozek of UND and some others around the league have not or haven't yet.

Does anyone know if these players were disgruntled at SSM?

As far as I know, they had no problems with Shattuck.

As far as choosing the BCHL, I think it was a matter of being able to choose which team they wanted to play for, as opposed to being drafted to a USHL team. Also, they hear a lot of good things about the BCHL at Shattuck, and feel like the BCHL has done a little better job of adopting the new rules with less clutch and grab play.

The BCHL's weaker defensive play and lack of depth is what makes that league appear more offensive minded. It has little to do with how the refs call the game. Ask anybody who actually scouts both leagues and they will tell you that is the difference. Better talent throughout the lineup in the USHL makes it tougher for the top end players to score more. Which is a good thing because it pushes them harder.

If a player wants to challenge himself, he is better off doing it in a situation that requires him to develop all aspects of his game. The USHL will do a much better job of that than the BCHL. I don't think it is a coincidence that USHL players on the whole seem to make a greater impact in college than the more one dimensional BCHL players. There are exceptions. But the USHL does a much better job developing players.

The BCHL and Shattuck style of play are very similar, speed, passing and high tempo play. Not off the glass and out dump and chase style of the USHL. North Dakota seems to like that high energy type of player as well.
