The Tavares Question

Things are a bit slow now that we're in the heart of the summer, so I don't mind veering a little bit off topic now and again.

Today, I'll look at whether or not the NHL should make a special exception to allow Oshawa Generals John Tavares into the 2008 NHL Draft.

First off, let me say could you imagine what Tavares would be like in a Lemaire system? I don't think AO or even Sid the Kid could make the Wild's system entertaining.

Anyways, most importantly, Tough crap for Tavares. You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your birth date. No exemption. Could you imagine the uproar if they did though? Florida would be livid and demand (and rightfully so) compensation because certainly AO is just as dynamic of a player as Tavares is alleged to be.

Oh, and before anyone picks on my team, I don't know if he'd fit in New Jersey either. Their system in the past has been pretty boring too.

He's good for sure, but certainly not ready to go early.

Meh, the anticipation is part of the excitement. I say let him wait. I do like your point about the Western Conference needing a star though. Can anybody in the west get crappy enough in the next two years to take him? It'll be interesting to see if an NHL franchise would be willing to sandbag at the end of the 2008-2009 season to nab Tavares.

"Can anyone get crappy enough in the Western conference"

Hmm.. L.A., Minnesota, Colorado, Phoenix, and Chicago could be candidates

1. Rules can and do change. Florida would have no claim to Ovechkin since the rules at that time dictated that he couldn't be drafted.

2. If Tavares isn't ready for the '08 draft, who is?

3. Anticipation is great, but it doesn't sell tickets or get your league on TV. Nobody follows NHL hockey, let alone junior leagues in the US, so I don't see there being much anticipation from anyone other than the diehards fans who are already watching hockey.

hey now, Minnesota and Colorado shouldn't have made your list. Columbus maybe, but Minnesota is/was a playoff team and Colorado was close.

what are you smoking? He cannot, will not be drafted and no one in the NHL will consider changing the rules. Period. Get over it. Move on!!
