Duchene to Sign with Brampton

The Michigan College Hockey Blog is reporting that Matt Duchene has agreed to a contract with the Brampton Battalion, thus ending his commitment to Michigan State.

Duchene was a top prospect, but many were skeptical that he'd ever make it to college because of pressure from the OHL. It sounds like Brampton came through with the educational package that he was looking for. Duchene should do well at the OHL level next season.

pressure from the ohl?give me a break.sounds like sour grapes.matt made his choice to play in the ohl and thats cool.plus i'm a michigan wolverines fan,so its all good.

I hope that he walked away with a minimum of 300k from that "education package".
If not he was probably not smart enough for college anyway.

Methinks you overestimate the value of an MSU education...

He will be attending Humbar college and major in industrial design and yes, Brampton will pay for the full cost of his education.

Hey its not the OHL's fault that colleges in the U.S. charge sky high prices while those in Canada are more subsidized by the government.

Humbar will probably cost around 6K a year, compared to the 25+K an education at MSU would have cost but the degree will be the same!

Good choice by Duchene!

Value of a National Championship NCAA = Pricleless!

Go Michigan State!

anon 4:04 - Yeah, heavily government subsidized college education (it's bad enough in the US)...there's a reason the US is an economic power and Canada is our little sister - socialism vs. free market capitalism. "Sure, I'll be the government's whore the rest of my life, but at least I got a cheap education!"

Standard of living... life expectancy... better hockey. I'll take high taxes and health care for $200 Alex. If he's serious about making the NHL which he is, the better choice and better road is through the CHL. Look at the numbers of MSU or UM grads who have made the show vs those from the Plymouth Whalers. Better players, better competition and if you don't go on to pro hockey you still get an education. Reality is just that.

Pressure from the OHL? Isn't this what you NCAA guys refer to as recruiting?

it's obvious that you don't have a college education making ignorant comments such as this. Since when did Canada become a socialist state?

Nope, no college edumacation, I've learned in the school of hard knocks known as the real world.

You can call it whatever you want and hide behind it, but socialism is socialism. Though I understand the "heart" of the country, between Montreal and Vancouver, isn't as bad? Hell, even France finally woke up and didn't elect a socialist.

anther thing to remember, college guys are instantly marketable to the job force. CHL guys are on the bus for many years hoping for their dream shot......I like the college option as well as the American opputunities. I know how valuable a green card is to thoze Canadians, eh?

By the way, Jeremy Smith = Whalers guy overrated. USA kid who chose OHL and was a split timer, won no awards. He could of been a star at a college, but will languish in some minor league for years. What a waste.

Anonymous said...

What are you talking about in regards to Smith?

The kid is the top ranked goalie going into the draft.

He won:

USA Hockey's Dave Peterson Goaltender of the Year Award.

OHL Dave Pinkey Trophy for the lowest team G.A.A.

Do some research before you speak

another angle for a kid who loves to play hockey: 40 games per year vs 80-90 games per year...Hmm? You're only young once!

Also, post-CHL hockey in the AHL isn't too bad an option for 20-23 year-olds while trying to make the NHL. Can still go to/finish college afterwards, if it doesn't work out. Besides, what jobs to college grads get immediately anyway? And, they have no money while in school.

So, let's review: CHL/AHL = job making money to play hockey vs. NCAA less hockey and no money

300K?... only in america buddy.. canadian schools only cost 25k a year max... not this bogus amount to send your kid to school in america

haha your a joke buddy.. the kids rated #1 for the draft.. yep HUGE waste.. awards dont mean everything,

We'll see on Smith.....I would bet the ranch he is mediocre at best after seeing him play for 10 years.
Besides the OHL record on NHL goalies is pitifull. He will be someone's chance though.

"canadian schools only cost 25k a year max"

Yeah that's why a majority of companies value a Canadien college degree as nearly worthless. Fortune 500 companies are looking for kids from the Ivies, Michigan, Wisconsin, Boston College, etc. not from Humbar, wherever the hell that is. Its not a coincidence that all the finest minds in Canada go to American universities. Hell my H.S. diploma is probably valued more than a degree from Humbar.

Good point. Your probably right, I think that MJ and NCAA are going to be competting for some of the same kids, your not going to get them all.

First of all your U.S. education needs work as it is Humber not Humbar, so give me the Canadian education package anytime over the U.S. ignorant one anyday.

Anonymous said...

My education needs work? I got the spelling from comment #4. I guess your ripping on one of your fellow uneducated Canadien buddies. Your a dumbass.

Anon 3:39,
Are you drunk?
Can you read?

Haha 9:42, what an idiot.

The GRE (Canadien version)- You get 100 points just for spelling your college right!

What does it matter what school or nation you live in.

Both countries are two of the best in the world in which to live.

Right now we have soldiers being killed fighting together in Afganhistan as allies but here they fight over which school is better.

Are you all Hockey Fans, of course you are so stop taking shots at each other and just enjoy the game.

The only thing I'll say is that I can't wait to see Duchesne get a big head in the OHL scoring 1.5-2 PPG and then head to the NHL, which I guess is very similar to the NHL and score 1.5-2 PPG.... or uh...oh...um...yeah.

I believe the only way MJ and college hockey could be like the NHL is if they both combined! Yeah. MJ is really good at developing offense. Many of their players, even ones that flounder in college, go on to be big scoring players in the CHL. However, defensively speaking, I think the college game has an edge. It's harder to score in DI.

Being a cynic, I HAVE to believe the officiating is better in the CHL than the WCHA (baboons could officiate better than many college refs I've witnessed).

That being said, it will never happen. Canadians look down on Americans and vice versa. Can't we just get along? Nope, apparently we cannot. Oh well.

C'est la vie.

Anonymous said...

Can we get along!?
It is Canadians that are insecure and feel the need to trash anything that is American.
NCAA and MJ are two separate entities. It is about which one is right for the respective person.

I can assure you that there are many MJ players that in hindsight wish they would of chose NCAA, for a plethora of reasons.

MJ is an easier choice when you are 15 - 16 years old. At that age you are desperate for playing in front of big crowds and mini stardom. At that age you are not generally thinking long term.

Canadians are insure? All I'm reading here is a bunch of American College fans using useless and irrelevant stats and opinons to put down the CHL and Canada.

check out MSU on wikipedia.
MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, and music therapy.
they left out basic weaving :(
great paying jobs with that course of study.
i think matt made the right choice.
