DelCastillo Named Coach at Alaska

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner is reporting that Doc DelCastillo will be the next head coach at Alaska.

DelCastillo is a talented coach, and has been deserving of a head coaching position for a while. One of the main reasons for choosing DelCastillo was his reputation for recruiting. It will certainly be interesting if he can have the same success while recruiting in Alaska. It will also be interesting to see if his family is still as excited about the move once the temperature hits a billion below in January.

Alaska is a place that presents many different challenges from the average college program. DelCastillo is a talented coach, however, and should be able to meet them.

I am very happy for Doc. He is a great guy, talented coach, and rentless recruiter. Alaska should improve with Doc at the helm.

I know that Doc has wanted to be a head coach for a couple of years now. There were lots of rumors that he would be the head coach at UNO within a couple of years.

It is a little interesting that he would take the Alaska job as he has no ties to Alaska. Doc graduated from St. Cloud and had coached for the Omaha Lancers (Asst.), St. Cloud (asst.), Rochester Mustangs (Head Coach), the Lancers (asst.), and UNO (Asst). His wife is a UNO grad and his kids have lived most of their lives in Omaha. He is very connected in the USHL and the upper midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan). He will be interesting to see if he recruits as well from Western Canada (AJHL & BCJHL) and the Western US and Alaska. Doc is smart, and should do well. He is a special teams geru, and I expect Alaska to be very good on the PP and PK.

Congrats to Doc
