Going Overseas

Fellow blogger/real journalist Kyle Whitney, wrote a piece for the Northern Michigan student newspaper on Northern Michigan's attempt to recruit in Europe.

The theory for Northern Michigan is that they can go over to Europe and be the only ones actively recruiting over there, as opposed to going to a junior league like the USHL, where they are competing with every other team, including teams that have a much higher-profile than NMU.

Of course the one problem is that it's a lot more expensive to fly to Stockholm as opposed to a place like Omaha or Vancouver. But if these European players can be very successful for Northern Michigan, perhaps more teams will start footing the cost to recruit in Europe.

which is ridiculous, what other college sports recruit over seas? this is taking away the opportunities from the American players. anyone notice a shortage of great American players in the NHL lately? this is probably due to going overseas and getting European players when they should be picking up American players. There are a lot of great American players that never get the chance to play because of situations like this. It is the US colleges fault that there arent as many US players making an impact in the NHL. Canada has the CHL-3 leagues to develop their players, Europe has even more, while the US has 1-college that is on par with the rest. Why fill our only developmental league with foreigners instead of our own?

Do you want me to keep going?

The NMU coach should do whatever it takes to win within the rules. It's his job.

The first poster is lost. Do you think a company would be sucessful if they were only to promote from within, rather than hire out? Its about competition. Limiting the recruiting grounds to North AMerica would give US players a false sense of ability, thus allowing the on-ice product to be sub-par. Globalization, bitches. I'd assume the NCAA will pass some sort of rule, limiting or banning Euro import players down the road, or atleast make schools take the same number of male and female imports... all while not wearing a uniform with a hostile or abusive mascot, such as a duck or a feather. Don't get me started Mr/s. First Poster.

You'll be hard pressed to find a competitive college tennis team that doesn't have international students on it.

Michigan State?

Oh wait......you said competitive.

I agree with the 2nd poster, You have to field the best available team because its your job. If it means going to Europe so be it. At least their not the big-time bb and fb coaches who just take the shortcut by paying tens of thousands of dollars to the best available recruits for their services.

from a coaches point of view, yes you must do what it takes to be competitive and keep your job, but there are so many good US players...going to Europe is unnecessary unless you have shitty program in the first place and need desperate players to come play for you. US NCAA should invest their money into developing American players as it is a US based organization. Like the first poster said...anyone notice a shortage in impact American players?

No, if you mean less than before. There never really will be a ton of high end talent like there is in Canada, but look at the last few year's drafts. There has been a ton of Americans taken in the first round. I think in the last three years the U.S. has produced more first round draft picks than ever before.
