NCAA Preview: Michigan State

The Spartans struggled down the stretch, and were at risk of not even making the tournament, but a solid playoff performance helped get MSU into the tournament.

The Spartans are led by goalie Jeff Lerg. His numbers have gone down a bit this year, but he is still capable of stealing a game for the Spartans. Sophomores Tim Kennedy and Justin Abdelkader have also emerged as offensive threats. Junior Bryan Lerg is the team's best finisher with 23 goals, including 8 game-winning goals.

MSU is 5-6-1 against other tourney teams, including a split with Notre Dame, who is also in their regional. They seem to have worked their way through a late-season slump where they lost 4 of 5 games.

They will meet Boston U in their first game. It should be a match-up of interesting contrasts. BU is a much stronger defensive team, but Michigan State has a little more firepower. If MSU's defense can keep the puck out of their net, they've got a chance to get a few past John Curry and win the game.
