The Minnesota State High School tournament really got kicked off tonight, with a lot of the early round games being played.
Everyone expected Section 7AA to be the tightest section, and tonight certainly disappoint. Elk River knocked off Brainerd 1-0 in double overtime, in what looks like the best game of the evening. That sets up two great semifinal matches at the DECC this Saturday. In the first game, top seed Cloquet will take on Elk River, and in the second gmae, Duluth East will meet Grand Rapids. I'm guessing at least one of the final three games in this section is decided in overtime, with any one of the four capable of winning the whole thing.
This was pretty much inevitable, but the first defending section champion fell tonight. In Section 1A, Mankato East lost at home to Waseca 10-8, meaning the Cougars won't defend their title. It was a rough year for Mankato East, after losing pretty much their entire team from last season.
Other than that, there were no major upsets tonight. Things should really heat up this weekend with the sectional semifinals.
