Ryan McDonagh is a Badger

Ryan McDonagh, a junior defenseman from Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul has officially committed to Wisconsin. He'll join the Badgers starting in the 2008-2009 season.

The Badgers have some very high-profile defensive prospects coming in future years with Nigel Williams and Jamie McBain next season, and McDonagh and Nick Pryor coming to Madison in a few years.

Don't know that I would consider McDonagh a high profile recruit. He wasn't recruited by many of the heavyweight D-1 programs. A high profile recruit usually has more options beyond second tier programs like St. Cloud or Duluth.

Pryor has been struggling a bit with Hill Murray this year. I think Eaves may have bit too early on him.

I've heard a lot of people say a lot of good things about McDonagh. Maybe he won't win the Hobey Baker, but I'm guessing a lot of teams are going to wish they had him in a couple of years.

This has been a rough year for Pryor, but you have to keep in mind that he is still a freshmen in high school. How many other 14 year olds could step onto one of the best high school teams in the state and beat out four 18 year olds for playing time?

He's definitely one of the best in his age group and more than likely going to be a very good player down the road.

Prior has been seeing much less ice time the last few weeks. A lot of people have doubts about him. Especially in regards to how much his dad has to do with where he is at. It doesn't hurt your opporunities when poppa is a scout and an ex-pro player that can push you into the faces of people before you have earned it. There are phenoms out there at that age but this kid isn't one of them.

Some people just dont get it. The thing with pryor is, is that the Wisconsin staff sees a lot of upside in Pryor. Lets take Schroeder for example... the kid has been the same player for 2 years now and will not get any bigger, and im sure schools have seen that and that leaves them short. Pryor is a very good pick-up for Wisconsin. He might not be doing that good this year, but he also has 4 senior d-man playing in front of him that are veterans. His vision, skating and puck moving ability will seperate him from others in the future. I guarantee he will be turning heads these next couple years.

The lack of size for Schroeder is meaningless. Some of the best college players of recent vintage are smaller guys. Brett Sterling, Marty Sertich and Jeff Panzer to name a few. To put down a kid who is actually producing quite a bit against older guys while pumping up a kid like Pryor that is struggling against that same kind of competition is definitely something I don't get. Schroeder is actually getting better while Pryor appears to be in neutral.

Pryor should be on JV right now. Just goes to show what having an influential daddy can do for a some kids. Wisconsin moved too soon on this kid. But it is a good thing for them that a verbal isn't binding and they'll be able to get out of it down the road.

Just curious...how many of you Pryor haters have actually seen him play? I think we should let him hit puberty before we decide that he is going to suck.

How many of you have seen pryor play? Pryor has gotten a lot better since 2 years ago? How can you say he is neutral? JV? I feel bad for the kid. He was never given a chance to prove himself at Varsity and by talking to a lot of people who saw the Christmas tournament think that he has made a huge step since the beginning of the season. I have seen pryor's dad at some games and just by watching him he is not the type that will talk up his kid. Every time ive seen him hes sitting or standing by himself.
I am 100 percent behind pryor and i think he has a bright future. Dont knock him until you see him, because his upside is huge.

Maybe everyone should wait until puberty prior to commiting to him as being a star. (That also goes for all these other 15, 16, and even some 17 y/o s that are gaining commitments). Are some of these college coaches nuts?
