Recruting News

Omaha coach Mike Kemp apparently wasn't satisfied with his goaltending, so he went out and got a commitment from Jeremie Dupont, from Aurora of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. Dupont is a late '88 birthday, which would technically make him a 2007 recruit, but Dupont is accelerating his schooling to start with the Mavericks next season.

According to Paul Shaheen's Research on Ice newsletter, 2008 defenseman Steve West has committed to Ohio State. West, who plays for Detroit Honeybaked, was ranked as the best defenseman in the country at last summer's Select 15 Festival. It was a bit of a surprise that West did not choose Michigan, as he had attended many Michigan games unofficially so far this season.

Another recruit was spotted on Michigan's campus this week. Defenseman Eric Gryba of Green Bay in the USHL visited Yost this week. Michigan is one of three finalists for Gryba along with Boston University and North Dakota.

Minnesota coach Don Lucia accidentally leaked his magical recruiting strategy to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

We're still recruiting," Lucia said. "I would like to add a defenseman, maybe a walk-on, who can defend. And a [forward] who can skate, a guy who can kill penalties.

Genius! Defenseman who can defend. Forward who can skate. Wow.

One interesting note from the article is that Lucia also says he is looking at more 19 and 20 year olds to balance out all the young players Minnesota has taken lately.

I have to admit that the Lucia stuff was pretty funny.

Too bad Michigan's defensemen and forwards were too busy taking penalties on Friday to actually defend and skate, respectively.

So was the butt kicking Lucia's team put on Michigan.

Awful, awful quiet .......
A big weekend for WCHA teams in the Showcase.

Will agree with Blue on one thing .... why does Chris Harrington play? His penalties in the second period Friday were two of the dumbest I've ever seen (both gave Michigan 5-on-3 power plays and could have easily changed the outcome of the game).

I think the silence has something to do with the number 221 and the word xanthine.
