Let's Play Hockey

Games to Watch:
Michigan vs. Ohio State
Yes, it's a football game. But it's The Game. Plus it's a slow week in terms of great match-ups in college hockey.

#5 North Dakota at St. Cloud State
St. Cloud has the opportunity to steal some points at home against a higher ranked opponent. It should be a great goaltending match-up between Bobby Goepfert and Jordan Parise. I'm guessing the Huskies get a split.

Minnesota State, Mankato at #1 Wisconsin
Maverick fans wanted it, USCHO columnist Todd Milewski wouldn't give it to them, so the Western College Hockey Blog is here to fill the void. THE MAVERICKS WILL WIN A GAME THIS WEEKEND. Take a dab of the Mavericks recent hot streak led by freshmen goalie Dan Tormey, add a sprinkle of the Badgers being caught in a classic sandwich game between their huge series against Colorado College, and a big upcoming weekend against Michigan and Michigan State, toss in David Backes' dominance in Madison last year, and throw in a great big ole handful of blind freakin' homerism, and I think Mankato comes away from this weekend with at least two points.

#4 Alaska-Fairbanks at Nebraska-Omaha
Fairbanks is off to a great start this season. Omaha will need consistent goaltending to match the low totals UAF's goaltending duo of Wylie Rogers and Chad Johnson will post. Both Greg Barrett and Jerad Kauffman have goals against averages over 3.50 and save percentages below .900. It's going to be tough for Omaha to win consistently with those numbers.

Players to Watch:
David Backes, Minnesota State, Mankato
Backes played great in Madison last season, leading the Mavericks to a dramatic overtime win. He'll need to be heroic again to give the Mavs a chance at not making me look stupid.

Gabe Gauthier, Denver
Denver looked horrible with Gauthier out of the lineup last Saturday. They'll need him as the catalyst on their powerplay this weekend against the Gophers.

Brett Sterling, Colorado College
Sterling has the opportunity to pad his stats a little bit to help his Hobey Baker campaign against Michigan Tech this weekend.

Mankato didn't come to Madison last year...

Did I say Madison? I meant Midwest Wireless Center. Sorry for the typo. ;)

Didn't have a great day, huh Maize? The poor, poor Wolverine football team lost ANOTHER game to THE Ohio State. Minnesota, of all teams, has The Jug. Your hockey team can't seem to beat Minnesota, either, and will prove that again this coming Friday. And the Gophers may have something going after taking 3 of 4 points at Denver.

It must really suck to be you.

That was a little harsh. However, I have my agenda, just like Maize does, so he needs to take it just like he dishes it out.

5 of the last 6 for Blue? If I count correctly, the Gophers have won 4 of the last 6 meetings, which encompasses the last 4 seasons. Maybe you weren't counting the NCAA semifinal losses.
